Louisiana-Lafayette extends win streak to 12

South Carolina downs Kentucky, Virginia outlasts Miami, Vandy beats MSU

 

In Lafayette, La., Cody Boutte pitched into the seventh as sixth-ranked Louisiana-Lafayette completed a three-game Sun Belt sweep of Georgia State Sunday with a 5-3 victory to extend its win streak to 12. Boutte (3-0) allowed six hits and three runs in 6.1 innings with two walks and five strikeouts. Chris Griffitt fanned five over the final 2.2 innings to record his first save. All the runs in the game were results of home runs. Ryan Leonards (2 for 4), Seth Harrison (2 for 4), Ryan Wilson, Michael Strentz (2 for 4) and Jace Conrad (2 for 4) each had solo shots for the Ragin’ Cajuns (6-0, 22-2). Nic Wilson belted a three-run dinger for the Panthers (1-5, 10-14).

 

No. 2 South Carolina 8, Kentucky 3

In Lexington, Ky., Joey Pankake went 2 for 5 with a homer, two runs and three RBI as South Carolina salvaged the finale of its SEC series at Kentucky. The Gamecocks (3-3, 19-3) extended a 2-1 lead with three in the sixth and added three in the ninth. Connor Bright had two hits and two runs, while DC Arendas also went deep for South Carolina. Wil Crowe (5-0, 6 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 2 K) earned the win, while Joel Seddon (2.1 IP, 4 K) notched his seventh save. Michael Thomas doubled and scored for the Wildcats (3-3, 17-7).

 

No. 3 Virginia 8, Miami (Fla.) 3 (11)

In Coral Gables, Fla., Robbie Coman had a two-run single to highlight a six-run 11th as Virginia evened its ACC series with Miami. Branden Cogswell went 4 for 7 with one run and one RBI, while Brandon Downes added three hits, including a home run, for the Cavaliers (6-2, 18-4). Connor Jones (2-0, 3 IP, H, BB, 2 K) earned the win in relief of Josh Sborz (7 IP, H, 2 R, 2 BB, 10 K). Whit Mayberry recorded the final three outs for his first save. Johnny Ruiz had a two-run double for the Hurricanes (5-3, 13-11).

 

No. 4 Vanderbilt 5, No. 20 Mississippi State 1

In Starkville, Miss., Tyler Ferguson tossed six scoreless innings as Vanderbilt won its SEC series at Mississippi State. Ferguson (4-0) allowed two hits and two walks while striking out three. Carson Fulmer (3 IP, H, R, BB, 4 K) earned his seventh save. The game was scoreless before the Commodores (3-3, 20-5) scored one in the seventh, two in the eighth and two in the ninth. The Bulldogs (4-2, 17-9) tallied their run in the eighth. Bryan Reynolds went 3 for 5 with a run, while Ro Coleman added two hits and two runs for Vanderbilt. Gavin Collins had two hits, including a double, for MSU.

 

Arizona State 7, No. 5 Oregon State 3

In Corvallis, Ore., Arizona State snapped a 3-3 tie with a run in the eighth and added three insurance runs in the ninth to win its Pac-12 series over Oregon State. Dalton Dinatale drove in three, while RJ Ybarra had three hits and two RBI for the Sun Devils (3-3, 12-10). Jordan Aboites (2-1, 2 IP, H, UE, 2 K) earned the win, while Ryan Burr (2 IP, H, BB, 2 K) notched his fifth save. Kavin Keyes went 2 for 4 with one run for the Beavers (4-2, 19-5).

 

No. 7 LSU 2, Georgia 2 (tie – 13 innings)

In Baton Rouge, La., Alex Bregman had an RBI single for LSU in the seventh to knot the score at 2-2 in a game that ended in a tie after 13 innings so that Georgia could catch its flight home. Mark Laird had two hits and a run for the Tigers (3-2-1, 20-4-1). Parker Bugg tossed four scoreless innings in relief for LSU with two hits and two strikeouts. Nelson Ward had two hits and a run for the Bulldogs (1-4-1, 14-10-1), who scored their runs in the top of the first.

 

No. 8 Cal Poly 8, California 4

In San Luis Obispo, Calif., Tim Wise and Nick Torres both had two hits and two RBI as Cal Poly won the rubber match in its series with California. The Mustangs (19-4) scored four in the second and three in the sixth. Casey Bloomquist (5-0, 7.1 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 4 K) earned the win, with Reed Reilly (1.2 IP, H, 3 K) recording his fifth save. Nick Halamandaris was a triple short of the cycle, going 3 for 4 with three runs, while Derek Campbell went 2 for 4 with a homer and two RBI for the Golden Bears (11-11).

 

No. 9 Oregon 3, Utah 1

In Eugene, Ore., Shaun Chase delivered a pinch-hit two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to snap a 1-1 tie and carry Oregon to a Pac-12 series sweep of Utah. Jeff Gold (6-0) allowed two hits and one unearned run over eight innings with three strikeouts to claim the victory. Darrell Hunter worked a perfect ninth for his first save. Cory Hunter doubled and scored in the first for the Utes (0-6, 9-13).

 

Rutgers 11, No. 10 Louisville 2

In Louisville, Ky., Gaby Rosa allowed three hits over eight innings as Rutgers won the finale of its American series at Louisville. Rosa (2-0) surrendered one walk and two unearned runs with one strikeout. Mike Carter went 2 for 2 with a triple, two runs and three RBI, while Pat Sweeney (2 for 4) and R.J. Devish (1 for 2) both scored three for the Scarlet Knights (1-2, 8-12). Kyle Gibson went 1 for 4 with one RBI for the Cardinals (2-1, 17-6).

 

Maryland 5, No. 11 NC State 2

In College Park, Md., Jose Cuas homered and drove in three as Maryland completed an ACC series sweep of NC State. Bobby Ruse (2-0, 3.2 IP, 2 H, 5 K) earned the win in relief, while Kevin Mooney (1.1 IP, 2 H, R, 3 K) recorded his fourth save for the Terrapins (5-4, 16-6). Trea Turner and Logan Ratledge both homered for the Wolfpack (3-6, 14-8).

 

No. 12 Cal State Fullerton 6, Long Beach State 5

In Fullerton, Calif., Cal State Fullerton used a four-run second to build an early 6-0 lead and held on to win its series over Long Beach State and give head coach Rick Vanderhook his 100th career victory. J.D. Davis went 2 for 3 with a triple, one run and two RBI, while A.J. Kennedy went 1 for 1 with three walks and two runs for the Titans (13-8). Miles Chambers (1-0, 2 IP, BB, 2 K) was awarded the win and Davis ( 1 IP, 3 H, 2 R) picked up his third save.

 

No. 14 Rice 3, Florida Atlantic 2 (12)

In Houston, Skyler Ewing delivered a run-scoring single with two away in the bottom of the 12th as Rice completed a Conference USA sweep of Florida Atlantic. Ewing had a sacrifice fly in the fourth before a homer by John Clay Reeves (2 for 4) for the home Owls (8-1, 19-6). Matt Ditman (2-2) hurled five hitless innings with eight strikeouts to earn the victory in relief of starter Chase McDowell (7 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 3 K). CJ Chatham homered for the visiting Owls (3-6, 14-10).

 

No. 15 Tennessee 8, Auburn 6

In Knoxville, Tenn., Taylor Smart and David Houser both had two runs and two RBI as Tennessee salvaged the SEC series finale. Smart had three hits, including two doubles, while Houser added two hits. Will Maddox went 3 for 4 with a triple and two runs. Andrew Lee (3-0, 6 IP, 6 H, 4 R, BB, 4 K) earned the win, while Drake Owenby recorded the final two outs for his fifth save. Blake Austin (2 for 4, 2 R, 3 RBI) and Ryan Tella (1 for 3, 2 R) homered for the Tigers (4-2, 17-8).

 

No. 17 Ole Miss 8, Missouri 3

In Oxford, Miss., Dalton Dulin had a two-run single to highlight a six-run eighth as Ole Miss completed an SEC sweep of Missouri. Austin Anderson (2 for 4, 2B) and Braxton Lee both scored twice for the Rebels (4-2, 21-4). Wyatt Short (3-0, 1.2 IP, H, 3 K) recorded the win. Kendall Keeton had two hits and one RBI for the Tigers (1-5, 11-12).

 

No. 18 UCLA 8, Washington State 7 (10)

In Los Angeles, Ty Moore had a two-run single in the bottom of the 10th as UCLA captured its Pac-12 series against Washington State. The Cougars (3-3, 9-11) used a pinch-hit RBI single by Jason Monda in the top of the 10th to take a 7-6 lead. WSU built a 5-0 lead before a three-run homer by Kevin Williams pulled the Bruins (5-1, 14-8) within two. The Cougars added one in the seventh before UCLA scored three in the eighth to knot the score at 6-6. Shane Zeile went 4 for 5, while Christoph Bono had two hits and to RBI for the Bruins. David Berg (3-0, 3.1 IP, 4 H, R, BB, K) picked up the victory. Ben Roberts had three hits, including two doubles, and two RBI for WSU.

 

Tennessee Tech 2, UT Martin 0

In Cookeville, Tenn., Chris Chism tossed a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts as Tennessee Tech won its OVC series with UT Martin. Chism (3-0) gave up a double to Taylor Cox of the Skyhawks (2-7, 3-19) in the seventh. He did not walk a batter and plunked three. Daniel Miles went 2 for 3 with a double and a run for the Golden Eagles (6-3, 19-5).

 

Pepperdine 10, Santa Clara 0

In Santa Clara, Calif., Aaron Brown tossed eight scoreless innings, hit two home runs and drove in four as Pepperdine completed a West Coast series sweep of Santa Clara. Brown (4-1) allowed three hits and three walks with seven strikeouts. He snapped a scoreless tie with a two-run homer in the top of the sixth for the Waves (4-2, 17-6). Brown belted another two-run dinger in the eighth to make it 5-0. Pepperdine added five in the ninth to complete the scoring. Devin Carter also went deep for the Waves. Kert Woods had two hits for the Broncos (0-3, 9-14).

 

Dartmouth 3, Kansas 2 (10)

In Lawrence, Kan., Adam Gauthier delivered an RBI single with two away in the top of the 10th as Dartmouth edged Kansas. Nick Ruppert went 3 for 5 with a run for the Big Green (3-9). Duncan Robinson (1-0, 2 IP, H, BB, K) earned the victory. Blair Beck had two hits and one RBI for the Jayhawks (16-8).

 

Washington 8, Arizona 0

In Seattle, Brian Wolfe went 2 for 4 with a homer, two runs and three RBI as Washington completed a Pac-12 sweep of Arizona. The first-place Huskies (5-1, 16-5-1) scored one in the third, two in the fourth and five in the fifth to extend its win streak to six. Erik Forgione (2 for 3) also drove in three for UW. Jeff Brigham (4-0, 6 IP, 3 H, BB, 4 K) earned the win. Trent Gilbert and Zach Gibbons both had a double for the Wildcats (1-5, 11-15).

 

Ohio State 1, Michigan State 0

In Columbus, Ohio, Tanner Tully and Travis Lakins combined on the shutout as Ohio State won its opening Big Ten series against Michigan State. Tulley (3-0) allowed seven hits and one walk in seven innings with four strikeouts. Lakins surrendered two hits in two innings with a pair of punchouts. Connor Sabanosh went 2 for 4 and scored the game’s lone run in the fifth for the Buckeyes (2-1, 15-7). Joel Fisher had three hits for the Spartans (1-2, 10-10).

 

UNCW 13, West Virginia 10

In Wilmington, N.C., Corey Dick matched his career high with five RBI as UNCW outscored West Virginia to win their series. Dick went 3 for 4 with a homer and two runs. The Seahawks (11-11) used a six-run second to build a 9-3 lead after three. The Mountaineers (12-8) put up five in the fifth and two in the sixth to take a 10-9 advantage. UNCW reclaimed the lead with two in the bottom of the sixth and added two in the seventh. Ryan LaGrange went 3 for 4 with two doubles, three runs and two RBI, while Luke Dunlap also doubled twice and drove in three for the Seahawks. Will Shepley (1-0, 3 IP, 2 H, BB) earned the victory, while Kelly Secrest allowed one hit and struck out two in the ninth for his first save. Shaun Wood homered and drove in four, while Billy Fleming had four hits and two runs for WVU.
