Stetson Stops Miami (Fla.)

FSU throttles UCF, LSU blanks Southern, Cal Poly tops NIU

 

In DeLand, Fla., Darby McCormick had a two-run double to highlight a four-run seventh as Stetson surprised No. 17 Miami (Fla.) 7-3 Wednesday evening. Jake Pequignot had a three-run double in the second to give the Hatters (6-12) an early 3-0 lead. The Hurricanes (10-7) plated two in the fifth and tied it with a run in the top of the seventh. Trey Norris (1-0, 0.1 IP, H) picked up the win, while Josh Thorne hurled two perfect innings to record his first save. Brad Fieger had two hits and two RBI for Miami.

 

No. 2 Florida State 18, UCF 1

In Orlando, Fla., Danny De La Calle had two hits and three RBI as Florida State completed a two-game sweep of UCF. The Seminoles (14-2) registered a pair of big innings, six runs in the fourth and seven in the seventh. DJ Stewart homered and drove in three, while Casey Smit (3 for 4) and John Sansone (2 for 2) both had three runs and one RBI. Bryant Holtmann (3-0, 4 IP, 2 H, R, BB, 3 K) recorded the victory. Tommy Williams (2 for 2, BB) homered for the Knights (7-11).

 

No. 7 LSU 8, Southern 0

In Baton Rouge, La., Jake Fraley had two hits and two RBI as LSU downed Southern at Alex Box Stadium. The victorious Tigers (16-2) scored in four of the first five innings in building a 7-0 lead. Jarret DeHart had two extra-base hits, a double and a triple, and two runs for LSU. Jared Poche (4-0, 2 IP, 3 H, K) and four relievers combined on the shutout. Brian Rowry had three hits for the visiting Tigers (2-9).

 

No. 9 Louisiana-Lafayette 7, Tulane 4

In New Orleans, the Louisiana-Lafayette bullpen blanked Tulane over the final six innings to win at Turchin Field. The Green Wave (9-6) scored four in the bottom of the third for a 4-3 lead before the Ragin’ Cajuns (14-2) reclaimed the lead with three in the fourth. Ryan Wilson (1-0, 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 3 K) earned the victory, while Reagan Bazar (1 IP, 1 H) notched his third save. Blake Trahan went 3 for 5 with a double, two runs and one RBI, while Caleb Adams homered and scored twice for ULL. Hunter Hope had two hits and two RBI for Tulane.

 

No. 11 Cal Poly 10, Northern Illinois 1

In San Luis Obispo, Calif., leadoff hitter Tim Wise went 3 for 4 with two runs and two RBI to lead Cal Poly past Northern Illinois at Baggett Stadium. The Mustangs (13-3) scored three in the first, one in the second and five in the third to take control. John Schuknecht homered for Cal Poly. Danny Zandona (1-0, 6 IP, 9 H, R, 6 K) earned the win. Johnny Zubek had two hits for the Huskies (1-14-1), who stranded 13.

 

No. 16 Clemson 2, Appalachian State 1

In Clemson, S.C., Zack Erwin and Matt Campbell combined on a five-hitter as Clemson nipped Appalachian State in front of 3,450 fans at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. Erwin (1-0) allowed four hits and one run in 7.2 innings with seven punchouts. Campbell gave up one hit and fanned three over the final 1.1 innings for his second save. Garrett Boulware had an RBI single in the first and Steven Duggar added a run-scoring base hit in the fourth for the Tigers (10-5). Ozzy Gonzalez went deep in the fifth for the Mountaineers (4-13). Sean Mason (0-1, 8 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 3 K) went the distance for ASU.
