Hayes helps Oregon State win at Portland

UNC hammers Elon, LSU blanks Grambling State, Virginia nips ODU

 

In Portland, Ore., Danny Hayes (right) went 4 for 4 with two doubles, three runs and two RBI as fifth-ranked Oregon State defeated Portland 5-1 Wednesday in front of a capacity crowd at Joe Etzel Field. Max Gordon snapped a 1-1 tie in the top of the fifth with a suicide squeeze and Hayes added a two-run double in a three-run sixth. Andy Pearson went 2 for 3 with one RBI for the Beavers (29-6). No. 1 North Carolina 14, Elon 5

In Chapel Hill, N.C., Colin Moran had two hits and four RBI to lead North Carolina past Elon. The Tar Heels (36-2) erased a 1-0 deficit with six in the second. Chaz Frank went 4 for 5 with a triple, two runs and three RBI, while Michael Russell homered and scored twice for UNC. Trevor Kelley (2-0, 2 IP, 2 H, 1 K) earned the win in relief. Sebastian Gomez had two hits and two RBI for the Phoenix (20-19).

 

No. 2 LSU 4, Grambling State 0

In Baton Rouge, La., Christian Ibarra had a two-run homer in the sixth to extend a 2-0 lead as LSU blanked Grambling State. Kurt McCune (2-0, 2 H), the second of 10 pitchers for LSU, picked up the win. Darren Farmer had a hit and a walk for Grambling State.

 

No. 7 Virginia 10, Old Dominion 9 (10)

In Charlottesville, Va., Jared King delivered a game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the 10th as Virginia rallied past Old Dominion in front of 2,797 fans at Davenport Field. The Monarchs (18-18) led 7-2 after five before plating two in the sixth, four in the seventh and one in the eighth to knot the score at 9. Branden Cogswell (2 for 5, 2 R) had a two-run double in the 10th for the Cavaliers (31-7) and came home on the single by King to give Virginia its 14th come-from-behind win. Mike Papi had a grand slam and drove in five for UVa. Kyle Crockett (3-0, 2.2 IP, 2 H, 3 K) recorded the victory. Josh Eldridge went 4 for 6 with two runs and one RBI for ODU.

 

Ball State 5, Indiana 3

In Bloomington, Ind., Ball State used a three-run third to get past Indiana at Bart Kaufman Field. The Cardinals (16-17) added single runs in the fourth and ninth. The teams endured a 3:05 lightning delay in the bottom of the eighth. Sam Tidaback went 2 for 3 with a double and one RBI, while Elbert DeVarie was 1 for 4 with a double, two runs and one driven in. Clay Manering (2-2, 6 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K) was the starter and winner, with Tyler Jordan (3 IP, 1 BB, 1 K) earning his second save. Scott Donley had two hits and a run, while Dustin DeMuth added a two-run homer in the sixth for the Hoosiers (26-8).

 

Campbell 11, Appalachian State 6

In Thomasville, N.C., Michael DeLucia homered twice and drove in six as Campbell outscored Appalachian State at Finch Field. DeLucia (3 for 3) had a three-run homer in the first, a RBI single in the third and a two-run homer in the fifth. David Olson (3 for 4, 3 R, 2 RBI) and Michael Felton (3 for 5, 2 R) both had three hits for the Fighting Camels (32-8). Matt Marksberry (5-2, 4 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 6 K) picked up the victory. Will Callaway (2 for 5, 2 R, 2 RBI) went deep for the Mountaineers (21-12).
