Johnson fans 12 as Dartmouth stays undefeated

Illinois nips SIU, UNLV downs BYU, UCF defeats Columbia

 

In Auburndale, Fla., Michael Johnson fanned 12 over seven scoreless innings as Dartmouth blanked North Dakota State 6-0 Monday to remain the lone undefeated team in Division I. The Big Green (7-0) has enjoyed its second-best start in program history, behind only the 1903 squad, which won its first eight contests. Johnson (2-0) scattered five hits and walked one. Duncan Robinson (2 IP, 1 BB, 1 K) completed the shutout. Dartmouth scored all its runs in the bottom of the third, keyed by a two-run triple off the bat of Jeff Keller (right) (2 for 4, R). John Skrbec went 2 for 2 with a walk for the Bison (8-9).

 

Illinois 2, Southern Illinois 1 (10)

In Marion, Ill., Michael Hurwitz delivered a pinch-hit RBI single in the top of the 10th as Illinois completed a three-game sweep of Southern Illinois at Rent One Park. The Illini (13-4) have won 12 of their past 13 contests, their best stretch since 1998. Brandon Hohl (3 for 4) led off the 10th with a base hit, was sacrificed to second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored the go-ahead run on the single by Hurwitz. Reid Roper (1 IP, 1 K) pitched a hitless bottom of the 10th to earn his fifth save, securing the win for Bryan Roberts (2-0, 2.1 IP, 4 K). Jake Welch had a hit and a run for the Salukis (9-10).

 

UNLV 10, BYU 3

In Las Vegas, Justin Jones had three hits to lead UNLV past BYU at Earl Wilson Stadium. The Rebels (16-5) scored multiple runs in four of the first five innings. Joey Armstrong (2 for 4, 3B, 2 R) and Mark Shannon (2 for 3, R) both knocked in a pair, while T.J. White had two hits and two runs for UNLV. Shannon (3-0, 7 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 5 K) also picked up the victory. Adam Law had a three-run double in the third for the Cougars (9-11).

 

UCF 5, Columbia 1

In Orlando, Fla., Eric Skoglund hurled eight scoreless innings as UCF won its series against Columbia in front of 1,145 fans at Jay Bergman Field. Skoglund (1-3) allowed three hits and one walk while striking out three. Erik Hempe had a pair of sacrifice flies for the Knights (14-8). Alex Black homered in the top of the ninth for the Lions (2-9).

 

Omaha 7, Iowa 6

In Wichita, Kan., Cole Gruber had a two-run double and scored in a seven-run fifth as Omaha edged Iowa. Brett Bass and Alex Mortensen both had two hits and a run for the Mavericks (4-8). Dylan Casey (1-0, 2 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 3 K) earned the win in relief, while Josh Bullock (1.1 IP, 2 K) notched his second save. Kris Goodman went 3 for 3 with two runs, while Taylor Kaufman and Taylor Zeutenhorst both had two hits and two RBI for the Hawkeyes (8-8).

 

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 7, Harvard 6

In Corpus Christi, Texas, Eric Weiss homered and drove in five as Texas A&M-Corpus Christi nipped Harvard. Weiss reach on an error and knocked in a run in the fifth. He added a grand slam in the sixth to give the Islanders (11-9) a 7-5 lead. Jonathan Gonzales had three hits, including two doubles, and one RBI for the Islanders. O’Shea Durnes (1-0, 3 IP, 4 H, 1 BB, 1 K) earned the victory, while Matt Danton (1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 K) recorded his first save. Carlton Bailey went 5 for 5 with a run and two RBI, while Tanner Anderson was 4 for 4 with two runs and one RBI for the Crimson (1-10).
