NC State is No. 1 in ACC Coaches’ Preseason Poll

 

NC State is the favorite to capture the 2013 Atlantic Coast Conference crown, in voting by the league’s head coaches as released by the conference office.

 

The Wolfpack received six votes as overall champion, while North Carolina picked up four. Florida State and Virginia each garnered one vote.

 

In the Atlantic Division, NC State earned 10 first-place votes and 69 points to outdistance the Seminoles, with one first-place vote and 60 points. FSU won the division crown a season ago. Clemson also got one first-place vote and 50 points to place third, followed by Wake Forest, Maryland and Boston College.

 

The Tar Heels were picked to repeat as champs of the Coastal Division, with nine first-place votes and 69 points. Georgia Tech, winner of the 2012 ACC Championship, picked up one first-place vote and 55 points to come in second. Virginia registered a pair of first-place votes and 50 points to take third, followed by Miami, Virginia Tech and Duke.

 

With Florida State’s appearance in the 2012 College World Series, the ACC has had 15 teams reach Omaha since 2006. The ACC had seven teams in the NCAA tourney a season ago and at least five conference squads have played in the postseason each of the past 11 years.

 

The 2013 campaign begins on Friday, Feb. 15, with all 12 teams in action. Conference play kicks off the weekend of March 8-10. Clemson at NC State will be the key series that opening weekend of league play. The ACC Championship will be held at Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham, N.C., May 22-26.
