Bruins beat Tar Heels, return to championship series

 

A first-time champion will be crowned this season.

 

Grant Watson and three relievers combined to hold top-seeded North Carolina to one run as UCLA in the College World Series at TD Ameritrade Park.

 

The Bruins (47-17) will face Mississippi State in the best-of-three championship series beginning on Monday, June 24. Both programs are seeking their first national championship in baseball.

 

Watson (9-3) allowed four hits and one walk in six scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Kaprielian fanned two in a hitless seventh and Weiss surrendered one hit in the eighth  David Berg (2 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 1 K) pitched the ninth to preserve the victory.

 

The Bruins broke through in the bottom of the second. Pat Gallagher (2 for 4) had a one-out single, moved to third on a base hit by Kevin Williams (2 for 4) and scored on a two-out single by Cody Regis to give UCLA a 1-0 advantage.

 

UCLA added to its lead in the sixth. Eric Filia reached on an error and was sacrificed to second. Gallagher singled to left to send Filia to third. After fouling off a squeeze bunt on an 0-1 count, Williams singled up the middle to drive in Filia and make it 2-0. The Bruins left the sacks full heading to the seventh.

 

The Bruins scored again an inning later. Brian Carroll drew a leadoff walk and was sacrificed to second by Kevin Kramer. Filia walked before Pat Valaika doubled both runners in to extend the lead to 4-0.

 

Cody Stubbs (3 for 3) had a leadoff single and scored on a fielder’s choice by Mike Zolk in the ninth as UNC avoided the shutout. The Tar Heels stranded 10 in the contest. Kent Emanuel (11-5, 6 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 7 K) was saddled with the loss.
