North Carolina eliminates LSU

 

In Omaha, Neb., Trent Thornton and Chris McCue combined to hold third-seeded LSU to a pair of runs as UNC advanced in the College World Series in front of 21,380 fans at TD Ameritrade Park.

 

Thornton (12-1), the closer for the Tar Heels (58-11) allowed nine hits and two runs in seven innings with four walks and three strikeouts. McCue tossed two scoreless innings with one hit, one walk and one strikeout in recording his second save.

 

Brian Holberton (2 for 4) put UNC on the board with a two-run homer in the first. The Tar Heels added single runs in the third and seventh. All-American Colin Moran went 3 for 5 with two runs and one RBI for the victors. The Tar Heels, who lost to NC State in the opening round on Sunday, have not dropped consecutive games this season.

 

Mark Laird had three hits, while Sean McMullen went 2 for 4 with two runs for the Tigers (57-11), who stranded 13 in their season finale.
