Mississippi State rallies past Indiana

In Omaha, Neb., Trey Porter had a two-run single with two away to cap a three-run eighth as Mississippi State rallied past Indiana 5-4 Monday to remain unbeaten at the College World Series at TD Ameritrade Park.

The Bulldogs (50-18) trailed 3-2 after seven before Brett Pirtle (3 for 5, 2 R) had a leadoff single and moved to third on a base hit by Wes Rea (2 for 5). Following a strikeout, Demarcus Henderson (2 for 4) singled to right to plate Pirtle with the tying run. After a groundout, Porter had a single to bring in Rea and Henderson, giving MSU a 5-3 advantage.

Chad Girodo (9-1, 6.1 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 10 K) earned the win in relief for MSU.

The Hoosiers were able to cut the margin to 5-4 with a run in the bottom of the ninth, but Jonathan Holder coaxed a groundout to record his 20th save.

Indiana (49-15) trailed 1-0 before plating one in the second and two in the third for a 3-1 advantage.

Sam Travis and Scott Donley both had two hits for IU.

Indiana will face Oregon State on Wednesday at 7 pm CT in an elimination game. The winner will have to beat Mississippi State twice to advance to the championship series.
