Bulldogs Down Cavs, Head to Omaha

 

In Charlottesville, Va., Wes Rea homered and drove in two as Mississippi State defeated Virginia to capture the Charlottesville Super Regional and advance to the College World Series.

 

Chad Girodo (8-1) earned the win in relief, allowing five hits and two runs in 4.2 innings with two walks and 10 strikeouts.

 

The game was halted by rain on Sunday in the middle of the seventh with the Bulldogs (48-18) holding a 5-3 lead. When play resumed on Monday, Hunter Renfroe had a double and scored to push the advantage to 6-3.

 

The Cavaliers (50-12) fought back and scored twice in the ninth while putting two more in scoring position before Jonathan Holder (2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K) got a groundout to end the game and register his 18th save.

 

Adam Frazier went 2 for 5 with two RBI for MSU.

 

Nate Irving was 1 for 4 with two RBI, while Brandon Downes went deep for Virginia.
