Palazzone pitches Georgia past Ole Miss

Dallas Baptist downs SIU, ORU blanks SUU, BYU takes two from Seattle

 

In Athens, Ga., Michael Palazzone went the distance as Georgia downed No. 19 Ole Miss 8-4 Thursday in the SEC series opener in front of 2,044 fans at Foley Field. Pallazzone (1-4) scattered nine hits and allowed two earned runs with no walks and eight strikeouts. Kyle Farmer (3 for 5, 4 RBI) had a three-run double in a six-run eighth as the Bulldogs (6-7, 21-13) erased a 4-2 deficit. Curt Powell had two hits and two runs for Georgia. Alex Yarbrough and Auston Bousfield both had two hits and a run for the Rebels (6-7, 23-11).

 

Dallas Baptist 11, Southern Illinois 8

In Dallas, Duncan McAlpine went 4 for 5 with two doubles, a homer, two runs and three RBI as Dallas Baptist rallied from a 5-0 deficit to outscore Southern Illinois. Joel Hutter homered twice, including a two-run shot in the bottom of the sixth to snap an 8-8 tie. Austin Elkins (2 for 5, 2 2B) and Ryan Behmanesh (1 for 2, HR, 2 R) both drove in two for the Patriots (22-10). Aaron Gilbreath (2-3, 2.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 K) picked up the win, while Stuart Pudenz (2 IP, 1 H, 2 K) earned his third save. Chris Serritella went 2 for 4 with a homer and three RBI for the Salukis (18-16).

 

Oral Roberts 6, Southern Utah 0

In Cedar City, Utah, Kurt Giller carried a no-hitter into the seventh and pitched a complete game shutout as Oral Roberts blanked Southern Utah in the Summit League series opener. Giller (2-4) allowed three hits and walked three while fanning six. The Golden Eagles (3-2, 16-16) scored one in the second, two in the sixth and three in the eighth. Nate Goro had three RBI, including a two-run single in the sixth. Jared Schlehuber went 3 for 5 with a double and two runs for ORU. Mitchell Kauweloa had two hits for the Thunderbirds (3-2, 9-23).

 

BYU 6-9, Seattle 3-3

In Seattle, Austin Hall had five hits and drove in two as BYU swept a doubleheader at Seattle. Hall went 3 for 5 with one RBI in the opener as the Cougars (16-12) scored three in the first and two in the second. Chris Capper (3-4, 6 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 4 BB, 4 K) earned the victory. Ryan Somers had two hits and two runs for the Redhawks (15-14). In the nightcap, Wes Guenther (2 for 4, 2B) and Stephen Wells (2 for 4, R) both drove in two, while Tanner Chauncey and Kelton Caldwell both had two hits and scored twice for BYU. Marc Oslund (3-0, 7 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 4 K) got the win. Jace Sloan drove in two for Seattle.
