Talbott tallies game-winner as Purdue nips Louisville in 10

Florida tops Florida State in Jacksonville, Arizona State edges Fullerton

 

In West Lafayette, Ind., Stephen Talbott had a game-winning single in the bottom of the 10th as Purdue won its home opener 2-1 Tuesday against No. 18 Louisville. Both teams were ranked in the top five in batting average, but pitching held each lineup to five hits. Blake Mascarello (4-1, 4 IP, 5 H, 1 K) won in relief of Connor Podkul, who tossed six hitless innings with one run, one walk and one strikeout for the Boilermakers (17-4). Jared Ruxer (7 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 4 K) was the starter for the Cardinals (18-6). Kevin Plawecki (right) had a leadoff double in the second and scored on a single by Barrett Serrato to give Purdue the early lead. Louisville tied it in the top of the fourth as Nick Ratajczak was hit by a pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Stewart Ijames. Angelo Cianfrocco had a leadoff double in the 10th and was sacrificed to third before scoring on the base hit by Talbott (2 for 4).

 

No. 1 Florida 4, No. 4 Florida State 1

In Jacksonville, Fla., Casey Turgeon had a two-run triple and scored in a three-run sixth as Florida downed Florida State in front of 10,751 fans at The Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. Vickash Ramjit had two hits and two RBI for the Gators (23-2). Johnny Magliozzi (3-0) faced one batter and got an inning-ending double play in the top of the sixth to earn the victory, while Austin Maddox fanned two in a perfect ninth for his eighth save. Devon Travis had two hits for the Seminoles (21-4).

 

Arizona State 1, No. 13 Cal State Fullerton 0

In Tempe, Ariz., Zak Miller and three relievers combined on the shutout as Arizona State nipped Cal State Fullerton in front of a crowd of 2,920 at Packard Stadium. Miller allowed seven hits in 4.1 innings with one strikeout. Robert Ravago (2-0) fanned one in 2.2 hitless innings, while Joseph Lopez worked the eighth and Jake Barrett the ninth for his fourth save. Joey DeMichele had a RBI single in the bottom of the sixth for the lone run for the Sun Devils (16-8). Carlos Lopez and Anthony Trajano both had two hits for the Titans (14-9). Fullerton suffered its second consecutive shutout for only the third time in its Division I history (since 1975).

 

No. 6 Texas A&M 7, Houston Baptist 2

In College Station, Texas, Jacob House went 3 for 4 with a double and four RBI as Texas A&M handled Houston Baptist in front of 3,674 fans at Blue Bell Park. The Aggies (20-5) scored in six of the first seven innings. Mikey Reynolds went 3 for 4 with three runs for Texas A&M. Corey Ray (2-0, 1.2 IP, 1 K) got the win. Josh Foust went 2 for 3 with a run, while Asai Adame went 2 for 4 with one RBI for the Huskies (6-15).

 

No. 10 South Carolina 7, The Citadel 3

In Charleston, S.C., Joey Pankake went 2 for 3 with a double two RBI as South Carolina defeated The Citadel in front of 4,417 fans at Riley Park. The Gamecocks (18-7) scored one in the first, two in the third and four in the fifth. Erik Payne had a two-run triple in the fifth, while Evan Marzilli and Tanner English both had two hits and two runs for South Carolina. Jordan Montgomery (1-0, 5.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 4 K) earned the victory. Nick Orvin went 2 for 4 with a run, while Tyler Griffin added a pinch-hit homer for the Bulldogs (9-15).

 

No. 11 Rice 17, Lamar 2

In Beaumont, Texas, Michael Rattarree went 2 for 6 with a double, a homer and three RBI as Rice rolled past Lamar in front of 1,727 fans at Vincent-Beck Stadium. The Owls (19-8) scored three in the top of the first and blew the game open with 10 in the fifth. Michael Fuda had two hits and drove in three, while Ryan Lewis went 3 for 4 with two runs and two RBI for Rice. Christian Stringer had two hits, four runs and two RBI for the Owls. Austin Kubitza (2-2, 5 IP, 3 H, 1 UE, 1 BB, 4 K) registered the victory. Brad Picha went 3 for 4 with a double and a run for the Cardinals (8-16).

 

No. 15 UCF 11, Florida Atlantic 3

In Boca Raton, Fla., Alex Friedrich went 3 for 4 with a double, a triple and four RBI as UCF flattened Florida Atlantic. Darnell Sweeney had three hits, including a double, and three runs, while Ronnie Richardson had two hits, including a homer, and two RBI for the Knights (20-6). Ray Hanson (2-1, 2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 K) picked up the win. Corey Keller went 3 for 4 with a homer and two RBI for the Owls (16-10).

 

Texas State 11, No. 16 Oregon 3

In San Marcos, Texas, Joey Fuda had two hits, including a double, and three RBI as Texas State downed Oregon in front of 1,514 fans at Bobcat Ballpark. The Bobcats (15-9) scored five in the first, three in the third and two in the fourth in building a 10-1 lead. Casey Kalenkosky had a two-run homer to spark the five-run first for Texas State. Andrew Stumph also went deep and scored three, while Nick Smelser had two hits and two RBI for the Bobcats. Taylor Black (2-0, 6.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7 K) picked up the win. Aaron Jones went 3 for 4 with a homer and two RBI for the Ducks (15-7).

 

No. 20 Ole Miss 12, Jackson State 0

In Oxford, Miss., Zach Kirksey had a three-run homer in a four-run first as Ole Miss blanked Jackson State. Tanner Mathis and Preston Overbey both had two hits and two RBI, while Will Jamison went 2 for 3 with three runs for the Rebels (18-7). Chris Ellis (2-0, 4 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 6 K) earned the victory. Aneko Knowles went 1 for 2 with a walk for the Tigers (16-8).

 

Liberty Bell Classic – First Round

 

La Salle 11, Lafayette 2

In Easton, Pa., La Salle scored nine over the final four innings to win at Lafayette. The Explorers (14-10) will face Penn on April 2 in the LBC semifinals. Brendan Norton had three hits and three runs, while Joe Bennie homered and knocked in three for La Salle. Andrew Santomauro went 2 for 3 with a double, one run and one RBI for the Leopards (6-14-1).

 

Penn 11, Villanova 4

In Philadelphia, Greg Zebrack went 3 for 3 with seven RBI as Penn pounded Villanova. Zebrack had a three-run homer in the first, a two-run triple in the second and a two-run double in the fifth for the Quakers (8-9). Marlon Calbi drove in a pair for the Wildcats (14-12).

 

Saint Joseph’s 4, Temple 1

In Ambler, Pa., Saint Joseph’s scored single runs in each of the final three innings in defeating Temple. The Eagles (7-18) will face Delaware on April 2 in the LBC semifinals. Kevin Kratachwill went 3 for 5 with one run and one RBI for Saint Joseph’s. Matt Elko went 1 for 3 with one RBI for the Owls (10-15).

 

Delaware 5, Lehigh 0

In Bethlehem, Pa., Dan Gatto tossed six scoreless innings as Delaware blanked Lehigh. Gatto (2-1) allowed three hits, did not walk a batter and struck out four. Stephen Richter fanned two over the final 1.1 innings for his second save. D.J. Long went 1 for 3 with two runs for the Blue Hens (11-14). Casey Turner went 1 for 2 for the Mountain Hawks (6-17-1).
