Vanderbilt uses four-run eighth to knock off Georgia

WFU edges Florida State, Maryland nips Miami, Arkansas outlasts MSU

 

In Nashville, Tenn., Vince Conde went 2 for 4 with 3 RBI and delivered what would be the game-winning hit in a four-run eighth as Vanderbilt knocked off No. 16 Georgia 5-3 Sunday in SEC play. Trailing 2-1 entering the bottom of the eighth, Tony Kemp (1 for 4) (right) led off with a single, advanced to second on a groundout and later scored on a two-out single from Conrad Gregor (1 for 4). Following a walk to Spencer Navin (1 for 3), Conde drove in Gregor and Navin with a triple and later scored on a wild pitch.  Drew VerHagen (2-2, 4 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 0 K) worked 2.2 innings out of the bullpen to earn the victory for the Commodores (3-3, 17-8). Kyle Farmer went 3 for 5 with 3 RBI and HR to lead the Bulldogs' (2-4, 9-15) offense.

 

Wake Forest 7, No. 4 Florida State 5

In Winston-Salem, N.C., Carlos Lopez and Mac Williamson helped power Wake Forest past Florida State in ACC action. Lopez (2 for 3) hit a solo home run in the bottom of the second, and Williamson (1 for 4) hit a two-run homer in the third as the Demon Deacons (4-5, 17-9) jumped out to a 4-0 lead after four. WFU starter Brian Holmes (5 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 6 BB, 8 K) moved to 5-0 as he earned the victory. James Ramsey (2 for 4, 2 R) hit a solo home run, his third of the series and ninth of the season, and the Seminoles (8-1, 21-3) scored four in the last three innings, but in the end it was not enough as Wake's closer Michael Dimock (1.2 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 1 K) picked up his seventh save.

 

Maryland 6, No. 9 Miami (Fla.) 4

In Coral Gables, Fla., Korey Wacker went 5 for 5 with one run and two RBI as Maryland salvaged the finale of the ACC series at Miami. The Terrapins (2-7, 16-9) scored a pair in the fourth, fifth and seventh. Jordan Hagel went 4 for 5 with a double and a run for Maryland. Brett Harman (4-1, 6 IP, 11 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 2 K) earned the victory, while Jimmy Reed (3 IP, 1 H, 2 K) registered his seventh save. Jarred Mederos went 3 for 4 with a double, one run and one RBI for the Hurricanes (7-2, 19-5).

 

No. 3 Arkansas 8, Mississippi State 5 (11)

In Starkville, Miss., Bo Bigham had a leadoff double and scored to spark a five-run 11th as Arkansas won its SEC series at Mississippi State. Jimmy Bosco (2 for 6, 3 RBI) added a two-run double later in the 11th for the Razorbacks (5-1, 22-3). Colby Suggs (2-0, 1 IP, 1 BB, 2 K) earned the win, while Cade Lynch got the final two outs for his second save. Sam Frost went 3 for 3 with one run for the Bulldogs (2-4, 16-9).

 

No. 2 Stanford 4-3, USC 2-2

In Stanford, Calif., Austin Wilson belted a game-winning two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth in the opener as Stanford swept a Pac-12 doubleheader from USC. Mark Appel (3-1) was one strike away from a shutout before Kevin Swick’s two-run single in the top of the ninth gave the Trojans (1-4, 13-8) a 2-1 lead. Appel allowed six hits and two walks with seven strikeouts. Kenny Diekroeger also drove in two for the Cardinal (2-0, 15-2). Brett Mooneyham (5-0, 6 H, 1 R, 3 BB) struck out nine in seven innings in posting a win in the nightcap. David Schmidt (2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB) notched his second save. Tyler Gaffney went 2 for 2 with one run for the Cardinal. Matt Foat had two hits, including a double, and one RBI for USC.

 

No. 5 North Carolina 4, NC State 3

In Chapel Hill, N.C., Tommy Coyle drove in the game-winner with a base hit with two outs in the bottom of the ninth as North Carolina evened its ACC series with visiting NC State. Trea Turner (3 for 4) had a two-run single in a three-run second for the Wolfpack (6-2, 16-5). The Tar Heels (6-2, 18-5) answered with two in the second and one in the third to tie it at 3. Cody Stubbs went 2 for 3 with one run for UNC. Michael Morin (2-0, 1 IP, 1 H) picked up the win.

 

Memphis 6, No. 7 Rice 2

In Memphis, Tenn., Tucker Tubbs had a pinch-hit RBI single to snap a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the eighth and Jacob Wilson (2 for 3) followed with a three-run homer as Memphis downed Rice to avoid the Conference USA sweep. Eli Hynes went deep in the second and Zach Willis added a solo shot in the third as the Tigers (1-2, 10-13) took a 2-0 lead. Christian Stringer (2 for 3) had a sacrifice fly in the sixth and Michael Fuda added a sac fly in the top of the eighth at the Owls (2-1, 18-8) tied it at 2. Patrick Bailey (1-1, 1.1 IP, 1 H) earned the win in relief of Chase Joiner (7.2 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 2 K).

 

No. 8 Kentucky 6-6, Tennessee 2-0

In Knoxville, Tenn., Corey Littrell tossed six scoreless innings in the nightcap as Kentucky swept a SEC doubleheader at Tennessee to capture the conference series. Littrell (3-0) allowed four hits and one walk with five strikeouts. Michael Williams (2 for 4) had a two-run single and Austin Cousino added a home run in a five-run seventh for the Wildcats (5-1, 24-1). Chris Fritts had a double for the Volunteers (2-4, 13-10). In the opener, J.T. Riddle had three hits, including a triple and a homer, and drove in three as UK won the completion of Saturday’s suspended contest. Alex Phillips (3-0, 4.1 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 1 K) earned the win in relief. Will Maddox had a two-run single in the fifth for UT.

 

No. 10 Arizona 7, No. 17 Oregon State 5

In Corvallis, Ore., Robert Refsnyder went 3 for 3 with two runs as Arizona won its Pac-12 series at Oregon State. Alex Mejia (2 for 5, HR) and Seth Mejias-Brean (2 for 4) both drove in a pair for the Wildcats (4-2, 18-7). James Farris (3-1, 7.2 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 6 K) earned the victory, while Mathew Troupe (1.1 IP, 1 BB, 3 K) notched his fifth save. Michael Conforto had a two-run single in the fifth for the Beavers (4-2, 15-7).

 

No. 12 LSU 4, Auburn 3

In Auburn, Ala., JaCoby Jones had a RBI single in the top of the ninth to snap a 3-3 tie as LSU avoided the SEC sweep at Auburn. Ty Ross (2 for 4) had a two-run single in a three-run fourth for the visiting Tigers (3-3, 18-6). Ryan Tella (2 for 4) had a two-run homer in the sixth as the home Tigers (4-2, 15-9). One inning later, Caleb Bowen tripled and scored on a base hit by Zach Alvord (2 for 3) as Auburn tied it at 3. Chris Cotton (2-0, 0.2 IP) got the win in relief, while Kurt McCune walked one and struck out one in in the ninth to earn his first save.

 

Utah 5, No. 19 Oregon 4

In Eugene, Ore., Parker Morin’s two-run homer in the top of the ninth gave Utah the eventual game-winning run in their Pac-12 series. Jimmie Sherfy (3-1) picked up his first loss after giving up two runs on one hit for the Utes (3-3, 15-6). Mitch Watrous (1-0) recorded the win in relief after pitching two shutout innings for the Utes (3-3, 7-15).

 

No. 20 Ole Miss 8, Alabama 4

In Tuscaloosa, Ala., Ole Miss erased a 4-2 deficit with four in the top of the eighth in a SEC series win at Alabama. Matt Snyder (2 for 5, 2 R) added a two-run homer in the ninth for the Rebels (3-3, 17-7). Preston Overbey (2 for 5, 2 R, 2 RBI) also went deep for Ole Miss. Dylan Chavez (3-0, 2.1 IP, 2 K) earned the win in relief. Jared Reaves had two hits and two RBI for the Crimson Tide (1-5, 9-15).

 

Arizona State 9, California 6

In Tempe, Ariz., Deven Marrero went 2 for 5 with two RBI and two runs as Arizona State beat California to win the Pac-12 series. Robert Ravago (1-0) picked up the win for the Sun Devils (3-3, 15-8) after going 1.1 innings in relief of starter Darlin Gillies who gave up three runs on seven hits over five innings. Michael Theofanopoul (1-3) took the loss after surrendering two runs on one hit. Tony Renda went 3 for 5 with an RBI and two runs for the Golden Bears (1-5, 13-9).

 

Louisville 12, Cincinnati 4

In Louisville, Ky., Cole Sturgeon had four hits and five RBI to power Louisville past Cincinnati in Big East play. The Cardinals (3-0, 18-6) were able to sweep the Bearcats (0-3, 8-14) as they cruised to an early 8-0 lead. Louisville scored four in both the first and third. Louisville's Zach Lucas (3 for 5, 2 R, 2 RBI) and Ryan Seiz (2 for 4, 2 R, 2 RBI) also had big days offensively and Travis Tringle (4-1) picked up the victory, striking out seven while allowing seven hits over five innings. Braden Kline went 3 for 5 with 3 RBI for UC.

 

New Mexico 12, TCU 7

In Albuquerque, Kyle Stiner went 4 for 5 with a double and three runs as New Mexico defeated TCU to capture the Mountain West series. The Lobos (5-1, 10-11) scored four in both the first and second to take an 8-1 lead. Chris Nunez had two hits, including a double, and three RBI for UNM. Jantzen Witte went 2 for 3 with two RBI for the Horned Frogs (4-2, 12-9).

 

Missouri State 5, Creighton 3

In Springfield, Mo., Clay Murphy allowed one earned run in seven innings as Missouri State completed a MVC sweep of Creighton. Murphy (4-1) gave up six hits and three total runs with three walks and seven strikeouts. Tyler Burgess got the final two outs for his fifth save. The Bears (3-0, 19-6) scored in four of the first five innings. Spiker Helms went 3 for 4 with two doubles and one RBI for MSU. Anthony Benboom drove in a pair for the Bluejays (0-3, 11-10).

 

Virginia 5, Clemson 3

In Charlottesville, Va., Derek Fisher went 2 for 2 with a double, a triple and three runs as Virginia completed a sweep of its ACC series with Clemson. The Cavaliers (5-4, 15-8-1) scored single runs in five of the first seven innings. Keith Werman went 2 for 3 with two RBI for UVa. Artie Lewicki (1-1, 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 4 K) earned the victory, while Justin Thompson (1 IP, 1 H, 1 K) recorded his fourth save. Steve Wilkerson went 3 for 4 with two RBI and Phil Pohl added a home run for the Tigers (3-6, 11-11).

 

East Carolina 15, UCF 6

In Orlando, Fla., Jharel Cotton struck out a career-high 11 as East Carolina avoided the Conference USA sweep at UCF. Cotton (5-0) allowed 10 hits, two walks and two runs. Tim Younger (3 for 5, 2B, 2 R), Corey Thompson (2 for 5, HR, 2 R) and Zach Wright (1 for 5, 2 R) each drove in three for the Pirates (1-2, 16-7). Alex Friedrich went 3 for 4 with a homer and two RBI, while D.J. Hicks added two hits and two RBI for the Knights (2-1, 19-6).

 

Sam Houston State 5, Texas State 2

In Huntsville, Texas, Colt Atwood went 2 for 5 with three RBI as Sam Houston State completed a three-game sweep of Southland Conference favorite Texas State. Atwood had a two-run single in the second and added a RBI base hit in a three-run fourth for the Bearkats (7-2, 14-9). Caleb Smith (3-2, 7.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 8 K) earned the victory, while Brandon Bergen (1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 K) recorded his third save. Ben McElroy had a double and one RBI for the Bobcats (4-5, 14-9).
