Bowling Green scores two in eighth to down Georgetown

San Jose State stops Lehigh, Xavier defeats Sacred Heart, Campbell wins

 

In Winter Haven, Fla., Bowling Green scored two in the bottom of the eighth to slip past Georgetown 4-3 Monday. The Hoyas (8-3) took a 3-2 lead in the top of the eighth on a base hit by Corbin Blakey (2 for 2). The Falcons (3-7) tied it on a single by Andrew Kubuski (2 for 4, 2 RBI) with two away. Brian Bien added a base hit to give BGSU the lead. Nick Bruns (1-0) worked the final 1.1 innings with three hits and one strikeout to secure the win. Jeremy Shay scored twice for the Falcons.

 

San Jose State 5, Lehigh 2

In San Jose, Calif., Caleb Natov had two hits and drove in four as San Jose State topped Lehigh. Natov had a two-run single in a three-run third and knocked in a pair with a base hit in the fifth as the Spartans (5-7) built a 5-0 lead. Jacob Valdez went 1 for 3 with a walk and two runs for SJSU. Zack Jones (1-0) allowed two hits in four scoreless innings with six strikeouts to earn the victory. Casey Turner and Brandon Sady both had two hits for the Mountain Hawks (2-6).

 

Xavier 4, Sacred Heart 1

In Port Charlotte, Fla., Alex Westrick tossed seven scoreless innings as Xavier got past Sacred Heart. Westrick (1-0) allowed two hits and one walk while striking out seven. Alex Vice worked a scoreless ninth to record his first save. Mark Elwell (2 for 3) had a run-scoring single to cap a three-run sixth for the Musketeers (4-7). Mitch Elliott went 3 for 4 with one run for XU. John Murphy had two hits and a run for the Pioneers (0-5).

 

Campbell 8, Holy Cross 0

In Buies Creek, N.C., Frank Zier pitched a complete game shutout against Holy Cross as Campbell went 4-0 in the Campbell Invitational Tournament. Zier (2-0) allowed four hits and four walks while striking out six. David Olson and Cam’Ron Summers both drove in two for the Camels (9-3). Jimmy Brenneman went 2 for 5 with a homer and two runs for Campbell. Alex Maldonado had two hits and a walk for the Crusaders (2-4).

 

Samford 7, Penn State 3

In Birmingham, Ala., Josh Martin struck out 10 in seven innings as Samford won its series against Penn State. Martin (3-0) allowed seven hits and two unearned runs. C.K. Irby, who went 3 for 4 with one RBI, got the final out for his first save. Zeth Stone went 3 for 3 with two runs, while Brandon Miller added a home run for the Bulldogs (8-4). Joey DeBernardis had two hits and two RBI for the Nittany Lions (2-7).

 

USC Upstate 8, Valparaiso 2

In Spartanburg, S.C., Greg Guers went 3 for 4 with a double, three runs and two RB as USC Upstate downed Valparaiso. Tyler Cook drove in three, while Dillon Way went 2 for 3 with two walks and two runs for the Spartans (10-1). Brandon Lee (2-1, 7 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 3 K) earned the victory. Bobby Martin had a two-run single in the second for the Crusaders (4-5).

 

Northeastern 9, St. Bonaventure 6

In Winter Haven, Fla., John Puttress had a two-run double in a eight-run seventh as Northeastern outscored St. Bonaventure. Jon Leroux went 3 for 5 with two runs and one RBI as the Huskies (4-2) won for the fourth straight time. Mike Hanlon (1-0, 2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 2 K) earned the win in relief, while Sam Berg got three outs in the ninth to record his first save. Jus Brozick had three hits and two runs, while Nik Brennen had two hits and two RBI for the Bonnies (5-5).
