Godwin suspended by East Carolina

East Carolina head coach Billy Godwin has received a two-week suspension without pay by the ECU athletic department for a self-reported NCAA violation which involves impermissible housing benefits for volunteer coaches.

Godwin will serve the suspension from Feb. 1 to Feb. 14 and will not be allowed to coach, recruit or perform administrative duties. He will also receive a formal letter of reprimand from ECU Director of Athletics Terry Holland.

The violations began in the fall of 2004, one year before Godwin became head coach, and continued into 2011. Four volunteer coaches received these benefits and three have made repayments. The volunteer position has been suspended for one calendar year, retroactive to Oct. 17, 2011.

ECU submitted its report to the NCAA on Dec. 12, 2011, and awaits its official ruling.

According to Godwin, assistant coach Nick Schnabel will assume the duties of head coach during his absence.
