Penalties against Arizona State upheld

The NCAA Division I Infractions Appeals Committee has upheld the penalties against the Arizona State baseball program.

The case involved violations over more than five years while Pat Murphy was head coach with coaching staff limits, paying student-athletes for work not performed, use of an impermissible recruiter and a lack of institutional control.

The penalties, including some self-imposed, are a three-year probation, a postseason ban, scholarship reductions, vacating victories, recruiting restrictions and limits on coaching activity during practice.

ASU appealed that three of the violations were secondary instead of major and that the three-year probation and postseason ban were excessive.

The Infractions Appeals Committee upheld the penalties imposed by the Committee on Infractions.
