TCU uses three homers to edge Texas A&M

Virginia blanks Radford, South Carolina wins at College of Charleston

 

In College Station, Texas, Taylor Featherston had two hits and a run as No. 10 TCU edged seventh-ranked Texas A&M 4-2 Tuesday evening in front of 5,253 fans at Olsen Field. The Horned Frogs (26-11) scored single runs in the fifth and sixth to break a 1-1 deadlock. The Aggies (26-11) got one in the bottom of the eighth to pull to within one before TCU added an insurance run in the ninth. Jantzen Witte, Josh Elander and Zac Jordan all homered for the Frogs. Krey Bratsen went 1 for 3 with a walk and one RBI for A&M. Andrew Mitchell (3-0, 5.2 IP, 2 H, 1 UE, 2 BB, 4 K) was the starter and winner, while Stefan Crichton worked the ninth for his second save.

 

No. 1 Virginia 12, Radford 0

In Radford, Va., David Coleman went 4 for 4 as Virginia scored eight over the first two innings to roll past Radford in front of a crowd of 1,373 at RU Baseball Stadium. The Cavaliers (37-3) set a school and ACC record with their 12th shutout. Cody Winiarski (5-2) allowed two hits and two walks in seven innings with six strikeouts to earn the victory. Chris Taylor (3 for 5, 2 R, 3 RBI) and John Hicks (2 R, 3 RBI) both homered for UVa. Jeff Kemp and Ryan Burgess both had hits for the Highlanders (21-15).

 

No. 2 South Carolina 8, College of Charleston 3

In Charleston, S.C., South Carolina added to a one-run lead with four in the seventh in its win over College of Charleston in front of 1,719 fans at Patriots Point. With the Gamecocks (29-7) leading 4-3, Adrian Morales ripped a two-run single and Peter Mooney drove in two with a double to extend the lead to 8-3. Robert Beary went 2 for 5 with two RBI, while Brady Thomas had two hits, two walks and two runs for South Carolina. Jamie Holler went 2 for 4 with one RBI and Daniel Aldrich homered for the Cougars (23-15). Bryan Harper (1-0, 2.1 IP, 4 BB, 3 K) earned the win in relief for the Gamecocks.

 

No. 4 Texas 4, Texas-Pan American 2

In Austin, Texas, Mark Payton snapped a 2-2 tie with a run-scoring double in the eighth as Texas topped Texas-Pan American in front of 5,523 fans at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. Cohl Walla’s base hit brought home Payton (3 for 4, 2 R) with an insurance run. The Broncs (16-13) scored single runs in the first and second before the Longhorns (28-9) answered with one in the third and one in the sixth. Paul Montalbano walked twice and scored two for Texas. Mike McCarthy went 2 for 4 with one RBI for UTPA. Kendal Carrillo (3-0) pitched a perfect eighth to register the win. Corey Knebel fanned two of the three hitters he faced in the ninth for his 12th save.

 

No. 11 Florida State 13, FGCU 2

In Tallahassee, Fla., Justin Gonzalez drove in three as Florida State thumped FGCU in front of 4,505 fans at Dick Howser Stadium. The Seminoles (27-10) scored multiple runs in four of the first five innings, including five in the fourth. Jayce Boyd and Taiwan Easterling both had two hits and two RBI, while Devon Travis went 2 for 3 with two runs for FSU. Mike McGee went 1 for 2 with two walks and three runs for the Seminoles.

Gary Merians (6-2, 4 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 4 K) picked up the win. Brandon Bednar had two hits and Zach Maxfield homered for the Eagles (19-18).

 

Mercer 6, No. 12 Georgia Tech 3

In Macon, Ga., Mercer scored three in the first and three in the fifth on its way to a win over Georgia Tech at Claude Smith Field. Thomas Carroll went 3 for 4 with two runs, while John Moreland and Jacob Tanis (2 2B) both drove in two for the Bears (25-15). Matt McCall (3-1, 3 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 0 K) was the starter and winner, while DJ Johnson recorded the final four outs for his second save. Sam Dove went 3 for 4 with one RBI, while Zane Evans (2 RBI), Matt Skole (1 R) and Jake Davies (2 R) each had two hits for the Yellow Jackets (27-11).

 

No. 13 North Carolina 8, Coastal Carolina 3

In Chapel Hill, N.C., Colin Moran had a three-run double in a seven-run fifth as North Carolina got past Coastal Carolina in front of 1,897 spectators at Boshamer Stadium. The Chanticleers (24-13) led 2-0 after four before the eruption by the Tar Heels (31-8) in the fifth. Levi Michael had two hits and two RBI for UNC. Scott Woodward had two hits and drove in all three for Coastal. Tommy La Stella went 3 for 4 for Coastal. Kent Emanuel (5-1, 3 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 4 K) earned the win in relief.

 

Cal Poly 5, No. 14 Fresno State 4

In San Luis Obispo, Calif., Chris Hoo’s two-run single capped a four-run eighth as Cal Poly rallied past Fresno State at Baggett Stadium. The Bulldogs (25-6) scored two in the third and Dusty Robinson’s two-run homer in the sixth pushed the lead to 4-0. The Mustangs (16-16) got one in the seventh before taking the lead in the bottom of the eighth. Frankie Reed (1-2) fanned two over the final 1.2 hitless innings to earn the victory.

 

Dallas Baptist 3, No. 15 Oklahoma 2

In Norman, Okla., Brandon Williamson allowed two runs in seven innings as Dallas Baptist knocked off Oklahoma at L. Dale Mitchell Park. Jason Krizan had a two-run double to cap a three-run third for the Patriots (23-12). The Sooners (26-10) tallied one in the fourth and one in the fifth. Williamson (7-1) allowed seven hits and one walk with five strikeouts. Michael Smith worked around two hits to keep OU scoreless in the eighth. Chris Haney had one hit and two strikeouts in the ninth for his ninth save. Landon Anderson and Kenny Hatcher both had two hits for DBU. Rick Eisenberg had three hits for the Sooners.
