Winkler was picked in the 37th round of the 2008 MLB Draft by the Milwaukee Brewers. Sophomore lefty Matt Purke was expected to be a high draft pick this season, but a shoulder injury had hampered his season. He was a first-round pick of the Texas Rangers in the 2009 MLB Draft, the 14th overall choice.
