MLB Draft takes 677 players from 206 schools

Junior right-hander Gerrit Cole (left) of UCLA was the first-overall pick of the 2011 MLB Draft. Five of the first nine selections were Division I players. The first three picks were all college pitchers. There were 24 total Division I players taken in the first round. Connecticut, UCLA and Vanderbilt each had two players selected, with the Bruins having two of the first three picks.


There were a total of 677 player drafted from 206 Division I programs. Vanderbilt led the way with 12, while Arizona State, Florida, Oklahoma and South Carolina had 11 each. Connecticut and Fresno State had 10 players drafted.


Schools with nine included Cal State Fullerton, Texas and UCLA. Those with eight included Arizona, Clemson, Marshall, Oregon, Oregon State, TCU, Texas A&M, Virginia and Wichita State.


Schools with seven included California, Georgia, Hawaii, Liberty, LSU, Miami (Fla.), UC Riverside, UCF and USC. Those with six included Arkansas, Auburn, East Carolina, Florida State, Kentucky, Louisville, Minnesota, NC State, Oklahoma State, Ole Miss, Pittsburgh, Stanford, USF and Western Kentucky.
