Stanford at Vanderbilt highlights second weekend

There are numerous intriguing matchups for the second weekend of the 2011 campaign.

The top series has No. 10 Stanford at No. 3 Vanderbilt. The Cardinal took two of three at No. 18 Rice last weekend and picked up a midweek win over Cal to start the season. The Commodores won four times on the West Coast last weekend and beat Belmont on Wednesday to stay undefeated. Pitching should dominate, as Stanford has a 2.57 team ERA, compared to Vandy’s 2.20 ERA.

No. 14 Cal State Fullerton heads to Texas to take on No. 4 TCU. The Titans took two of three from Long Beach State and also lost to No. 19 North Carolina. The Horned Frogs won two of three at home against Kansas before getting a win at Baylor on Tuesday. The games on Friday and Sunday will be televised on the Mountain West Sports Network.

No. 6 Texas heads out to Hawaii for the weekend. The Longhorns took three of four from Maryland before falling to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Tuesday. The Rainbows split a four-game set with No. 16 Oregon to kick off the season.

East Carolina makes a return trip to No. 12 Virginia after the Cavaliers took two of three from the Pirates to start the 2010 season in Greenville. UVa was impressive on the road this past weekend, going undefeated at Auburn’s Tournament. The Cavs defeated the host as well as UAB and Arkansas State. ECU swept a three-game home series with Youngstown State.

Other interesting series include Saint John’s at Georgia Tech, Ole Miss at Houston, USC at No. 18 Rice and San Diego against San Diego State.

There are some good fields in tournament this weekend. Baseball at the Beach will include host Coastal Carolina with Cal, Kansas State, NC State, Pacific and Western Kentucky.

The Kleberg Bank College Classic has host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi with Connecticut, Indiana and Oregon State.

South Alabama welcomes Alabama, Southeastern Louisiana and UCF for its tournament.

This is the weekend for the Urban Invitational in Compton and Irvine, Calif., with UC Irvine, Bethune-Cookman, Grambling State and Southern. Saturday’s games will be broadcast on the MLB Network, with Bethune-Cookman vs. UC Irvine at 4 p.m. ET and Grambling State vs. Southern at 8 p.m. ET.
