Burnette homers twice for Georgia Tech

NC State wins series against Virginia, Martin wins No. 1,600 for Florida State

 

In Atlanta, Chase Burnette went 3 for 4 with two home runs and three RBI as No. 3 Georgia Tech completed the ACC series sweep of Duke with a 9-4 win at Russ Chandler Stadium. Burnette had a two-run shot in a five-run fourth as the Yellow Jackets (11-1, 25-3) built a 7-1 lead. Thomas Nichols also went deep in the fourth for Tech. Matt Skole had a dinger in the fifth and Burnette added a solo shot in the seventh. Derek Dietrich had three hits and two runs for the Jackets. Brian Litwin and Eric Brady both had three hits and a run for the Blue Devils (3-9, 16-12).

 

NC State 7, No. 2 Virginia 6

In Raleigh, N.C., Andrew Ciencin had a grand slam in the seventh as NC State held on against Virginia to win the ACC series at Doak Field at Dail Park. Ciencin’s slam gave the Wolfpack (5-7, 18-10) a 7-3 lead. The Cavaliers (8-4, 23-6) scored twice in the ninth before Anthony Tzamtzis got a strikeout to secure the win. Tzamtzis (2-1) allowed three hits and two runs, one earned in 2.1 innings for the victory. Chris Schaeffer also homered for NC State. John Hicks (3 for 5, 1 R, 2 RBI) and Steven Proscia (2 for 4, 3 R) led the offense for Virginia.

 

No. 6 Florida State 9, Virginia Tech 6

In Tallahassee, Fla., James Ramsey had two hits, including a home run, and drove in four as Florida State salvaged the finale of its ACC series with Virginia Tech on Mike Martin Field inside Dick Howser Stadium. It was career win No. 1,600 for head coach Mike Martin, the fourth coach to reach that total. Ramsey’s two-run homer in the seventh followed a two-run blast by Parker Brunelle as the Seminoles (7-5, 21-6) took a 6-4 lead. Steve Domecus (2 for 6) had a two-run dinger in the top of the eighth as the Hokies (6-6, 20-10) tied it at six. Jayce Boyd walked and scored on a wild pitch to spark a three-run rally in the bottom of the frame. Mike McGee held Tech scoreless in the ninth for his fourth save. Tim Smalling had two hits and two RBI for the Hokies.

 

No. 4 LSU 15, Georgia 5

In Baton Rouge, La., Mikie Mahtook had two homers as LSU won its SEC series with Georgia at Alex Box Stadium. Mahtook (2 for 5, 4 R, 4 RBI) had a solo shot in the first and a two-run blast in the second as the Tigers (7-2, 23-4) took a 3-0 lead. Christian Glisson (2 for 3) had a two-run homer in the fourth as the Bulldogs (2-7, 10-17) pulled within one. LSU added three in the fourth, one in the fifth, three in the sixth and five in the eighth. Blake Dean (2 for 5, 2 R, 2 RBI), Leon Landry (2 for 3, 3 R) and Austin Nola (1 for 3, 3 RBI) also contributed for the Tigers. Zach Cone also homered for Georgia.
