Shaffer homers twice as Clemson advances to Omaha

In Clemson, S.C., Richie Shaffer went 2 for 5 with two homers and three RBI, and John Hinson went 3 for 5 with a homer, two runs and two RBI as Clemson built a big lead then held on for dear life in beating Alabama 8-6 Monday afternoon. The Tigers (43-23) roughed up Nathan Kilcrease (8-3) for six earned runs and 11 hits in five innings. Clemson, under head coach Jack Leggett (right), scored two runs apiece in the second, third and fourth innings and added two in the seventh - a two-run homer from Shaffer that would become necessary. Brett Booth hit a two-run homer, and Ross Wilson (2 RBI) walked with the bases loaded as the Crimson Tide (42-25) scored five times to close to 8-6. Will Lamb, the Tigers' third pitcher of the inning, entered with runners on second and third and got Jake Smith to fly out to end the game. Clemson reached the College World Series for the 12th time, the last coming in 2006, and joins South Carolina as Palmetto State teams in the final eight teams that will battle for a national championship in Omaha.
