Texas Uses Early Runs to Punch Ticket to Omaha

In Austin, Texas, the Longhorns built an early 5-0 lead and made it stand up as Texas held off TCU 5-3 to win the Austin Super Regional and advance to the College World Series for the 33rd time.

The No. 1 national seed, Texas will face Southern Miss in its opening game in Omaha on Sunday.

The Longhorns (46-14-1) put up three in the bottom of the first. Michael Torres had a leadoff single and was sacrificed to second. Brandon Belt smacked a triple to center to plate Torres with the game’s first run. Russell Moldenhauer grounded out to second to drive in Belt. Kevin Keyes blasted a homer to left, his seventh, to give UT a 3-0 advantage.

Keyes started the fourth with a double to right. With two outs and Keyes on third after a passed ball, Cameron Rupp doubled to bring in Keyes. Rupp would touch home on a base hit by Connor Rowe to give Texas a 5-0 lead.

Taylor Jungmann (8-3) tossed six scoreless innings for the Longhorns with two hits, one walk and five strikeouts. Chance Ruffin, the Game 1 winner, got the final two outs for his second save.

TCU (40-18) finally broke through in the eighth. With two outs, Hunt Woodruff doubled, moved to third on a base hit by Rivera and scored on a single by Corey Steglich.

The Horned Frogs added one in the ninth as Matt Vern had a one-out triple and scored on a base hit by Bryan Holaday.
