LSU’s win sets up an all-SEC match-up on Monday against Arkansas. The Tigers won two of three against the Razorbacks in Fayetteville in early May.

The crowd of 24,904 matched the Session 2 record set on June 17, 2005, when Nebraska defeated Arizona State 5-3.

It was the largest crowd ever to watch a Virginia baseball game. The previous high was 17,860 on May 28, 2005, against Clemson in the ACC Tournament in Jacksonville, Fla.

LSU won its CWS opener for the first time since 2000. The Tigers had lost three straight openers in Omaha.

The Tigers stretched their win streak to a season-high 11. Their last loss was the opener of the SEC Tournament, a 4-1 decision to Vanderbilt.

LSU improved to 4-0 against Virginia.

The Cavaliers became the ninth straight team to lose their first CWS contest. The last team to win its opener in Omaha was Georgia Tech in 1994.

The nine runs were the most surrendered by Virginia in this year’s NCAA Tournament. The Cavaliers had allowed 10 runs in the first six NCAA tourney games.

Danny Hultzen raised his season strikeout total to 100, a freshman record and eighth on the Cavalier’s single-season list.
