Arkansas head coach Dave Van Horn won his first game in seven tries at the College World Series. His Nebraska teams were 0-2 in both 2001 and 2002, while his 2004 Razorback club was also out in two.

“It’s really not about me,” Van Horn said. “I’m glad that’s over with. I do now have a College World Series winning percentage. I’ve been a part of two-and-out and it’s no fun. I am glad it’s over with and hopefully we’ll never talk about it again.”

The Hogs improved to 6-0 in this year’s NCAA Tournament, going 3-0 in the Norman Regional and 2-0 in the Tallahassee Super Regional.

Arkansas is 14-0 when scoring in double figures, including 4-0 in the NCAA Tournament.

Dave Serrano of Cal State Fullerton is the 11th head coach to bring two teams to the College World Series. He led UC Irvine to Omaha in 2007.

The Titans had their nine-game win streak snapped.

The last time the eventual national champion played on the opening day of the College World Series was Miami (Fla.) in 1999.

Gary Brown of Cal State Fullerton tied a CWS single-game record with two sacrifice flies. It is the 13th time it had been accomplished, most recently by Rich Poythress of Georgia against Fresno State on June 24, 2008.
