Plouffe Smacks Game-Winning Homer for Team USA

 

Trevor Plouffe homered in the bottom of the ninth to lift Team USA past Australia 4-3 in the final game of the second round of the 2009 IBAF Baseball World Cup at Stadio G. Falchi in Bologna, Italy.

 

Team USA (7-0, 9-1) secured the top seed in Group G for the Final Round with the win.

 

Justin Smoak belted his ninth home run of the tournament in the sixth to knot the score at one. Jon Weber had an RBI fielder’s choice later in the frame to give the U.S. a 2-1 advantage.

 

After Australia (5-2, 7-3) scored a pair in the top of the seventh to take a 3-2 lead, Plouffe had an RBI groundout in the bottom of the frame to tie it at 3. His two-out dinger in the bottom of the ninth gave the win to the U.S.

 

Cory Luebke fanned five in six innings for Team USA. Jason Childers had three strikeouts in two scoreless innings. Ehren Wasserman (1-0) recorded the final two outs in the ninth and earned the win for Team USA.

 

Plouffe and Lucas May each had two hits for the U.S.

 

Team USA will begin the final round on Tuesday, Sept. 22, against Venezuela in Firenze, Italy. Venezuela defeated the U.S. 13-9 in 11 innings in the first game of the 2009 World Cup for Team USA.
