Gonzaga doubles up Pepperdine

Stanford stops No. 10 Long Beach State; Oregon State outlasts Portland in 13

 

In Spokane, Wash., Jason Chatwood and Mark Castellitto each had three hits as Gonzaga split its two-game West Coast Conference series with Pepperdine with a 6-3 victory Monday. Matt Fields (4-1) allowed eight hits in six innings for the Bulldogs (1-1, 16-11) with two runs, one earned run and six strikeouts. Cody Martin gave up one unearned run over the final three innings to earn his fifth save. Chatwood’s RBI single in the third put the Zags on the board and Marcus McKimmy’s three-run homer in the fifth gave the home team a 4-0 lead. Castellitto’s two-run homer in the sixth gave Gonzaga a 6-0 advantage. The Waves (1-1, 17-8) scored their three runs in the top of the seventh.

 

Stanford 9, No. 10 Long Beach State 3

In Stanford, Calif., Sean Ratliff had two hits, including a three-run homer in the fourth, to spark Stanford past Long Beach State at Sunken Diamond. Ratliff’s bomb snapped a scoreless tie and gave the Cardinal (13-7) the lead for good. Cord Phelps added two hits, including a double, and an RBI for Stanford. Jason Corder went deep in the sixth and Rylan Sandoval had a pinch-hit homer in the eighth for the 49ers (17-8).

 

Oregon State 5, Portland 4 (13)

In Corvallis, Ore., Joey Wong’s RBI single in the bottom of the 13th gave Oregon State the victory over Portland in the four-hour marathon at Goss Stadium. John Tommasini started the winning rally with a single and moved to second on a base hit by Ryan Ortiz. Garrett Nash advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt, setting the stage for Wong. Nash had a grand slam in the second for the Beavers (14-8). Riley Hendricks’ RBI double keyed a two-run fifth for the Pilots (14-14). Portland posted another pair in the sixth to knot the score at 4-4.

 

Santa Clara 7, Washington State 5

In Santa Clara, Calif., David Abraham’s two-run double capped a six-run seventh as Santa Clara outscored Washington State. The Cougars built a 5-1 lead before the six-run eruption by the Broncos (15-9). Ryan Conan had an RBI base hit and Gabe Alcantar’s two-run single pulled SCU to within one. Geoff Klein’s RBI double tied it at 5-5 and Abraham’s two-bagger put the Broncos on top 7-5. Matt Wickswat (1-0) fanned nine in seven innings in earning the victory. Mark Willinsky struck out four over the final two frames to record his first save.
