Davis goes deep in eighth to lift ASU past UCI

Sun Devils use three homers to edge Anteaters

Ike Davis homered to lead off the bottom of the eighth to snap a 4-4 tie and lead fifth-seeded Arizona State over UC Irvine 5-4 Saturday afternoon at the College World Series in front of 19,638 fans at Rosenblatt Stadium.

The Sun Devils (49-13) will meet the winner of the Oregon State-Cal State Fullerton game on Monday evening at 7 p.m. EDT. The Anteaters (45-16-1) will face the loser on Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. EDT.

The Sun Devils had knotted the score in the bottom of the fifth on a homer by C.J. Retherford. ASU started the scoring in the bottom of the second as Matt Spencer went deep following a pair of walks to put the Sun Devils on top 3-0.

The Anteaters, playing in their first College World Series contest, took the lead with four in the top of the fourth. Bryan Petersen had a two-run triple and scored on a double by Sean Madigan. Ollie Linton’s base hit brought in Madigan to give UCI a 4-3 advantage.

Jason Jarvis (2-2) was the winner in relief, tossing two hitless innings with one walk and three strikeouts. UCI starter Scott Gorgen (12-3) took the loss, going 7.0 innings with eight hits, five earned runs, three walks and nine strikeouts.
