Savery, Rice savor seventh-inning rally

Degerman held Bulldogs hitless through six innings

In Omaha, Neb., Joe Savery had three hits and drove in a pair of runs in a four-run eighth inning as Rice rallied to top Georgia 6-4 at the College World Series at Rosenblatt Stadium.

The Owls (56-11) and Bulldogs (47-22) were engaged in a pitchers' duel until the seventh, when the teams combined for eight runs.

Rice led 2-0, and ace Eddie Degerman carried a no-hitter into the seventh. But Degerman, who had eight walks and nine strikeouts, walked the first two batters to lead off the inning. After one out, Ryan Peisel singled in a run to make it 2-1 and break up the no-hitter.

Rice closer Cole St. Claire entered to face Matt Dunn, who chopped a ball off the plate to third where Josh Rodriguez let loose an ill-advised throw to allow the tying run to score. Jonathan Wyatt followed by lacing a St. Claire fastball to Rodriguez, who managed to only get a glove on the liner above his head, to drive in the go-ahead run. Bryce Cox then came on, allowing a Joey Side RBI single before getting out of the inning with the Owls trailing 4-2.

Rice stormed back off Rip Warren (8-3) when Brian Friday doubled in a run, and Rodriguez (2 for 4, 2 runs) singled and took second to put runners at second and third for Savery. Savery, who went 3 for 3 with two runs and two RBI, singled in both runners to put the Owls back on top 5-4. Jordan Dodson (2 for 4, 2 RBI) singled in an insurance run later in the frame.

Cox (5-1) worked 2.2 scoreless innings to post the win. Rice advanced to face the winner of Oregon State and Miami, while Georgia will play the loser of that game.
