Head of the class
Ole Miss eliminates McNeese State

Freshman Stephen Head was 3 for 5 with an RBI single that broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth and pitched a three-hitter to lead second-seeded Mississippi to a 7-1 win over No. 4 McNeese State in an elimination game in front of 2,548 fans at Reckling Park. Ole Miss (35-26) will meet the loser of the Rice-Wichita State game at 7 p.m. CT. After surrendering a pair of hits in the second, Head (4-1) held the Cowboys (31-30) hitless until a one-out double in the ninth. He walked two and fanned seven. With the scored tied at 1 in the sixth, Seth Smith doubled with one out and came home on Head’s single to right. The Rebels added another run in the sixth, one in the seventh and three in the eighth.
