East Carolina hurler Seth Maness (left) was promoted to the
Major Leagues with the St. Louis Cardinals on April 29. He joins
Chad Tracy of the Washington Nationals as former Pirates in the
big leagues. Maness, 24, was selected by the Cards in the 11th
round of the 2011 draft. He was 2-2 in four starts this season
at AAA Memphis with 18 strikeouts and three walks in 25 innings.
Maness was the Minor League Pitcher of the Year for St. Louis in
2012, going 14-4 with a 2.97 ERA.
Former UMBC pitcher Zach Clark has been called up
the Major Leagues with the Baltimore Orioles. He is the third
former Retriever to reach the big leagues, joining hurlers Jay
Witasick and Wayne Franklin, who combined to pitch 19 seasons in
the Major Leagues. Clark was 1-2 with a 4.56 ERA in five starts
in AAA Norfolk. He tossed seven shutout innings in his last
start against Charlotte with four hits, one walk and seven
strikeouts. Clark signed with the Orioles as an undrafted free
agent following the 2006 season.
Rutgers baseball is close to its goal of $10,000
for the Vs. Cancer Fundraiser to fight pediatric cancer. The
entire team will have heads shaved following the game on Sunday,
May 5, against Connecticut. Senior catcher Jeff Melillo has been
the fundraiser organizer.
ETSU recently made a visit to Southside
Elementary School to read to students. The Bucs read and played
games with Ms. Henry’s kindergarten class. The ETSU Athletics
Department strives for 100 percent participation in community
