The University of Minnesota Board of Regents
approved Phase 1 of new Siebert Field. A groundbreaking ceremony
will be held on June 11. Construction on the 1,400-seat facility
will begin on June 18. The plan allows for future expansion that
includes additional seating, locker rooms and training facility.
The synthetic turf should be in place by September and the
facility should be completed in December. Siebert Field was
built in 1971.
Georgia
head coach David Perno (left) announced the reorganization of
his staff. Assistant coach Jason Eller, who has been on staff
for 10 seasons, will become pitching coach. Assistant coach
Allen Osborne, who has been hitting instructor and third base
coach, will also be the recruiting coordinator. Shortstop Kyle
Farmer, who was taken by the New York Yankees in the 35th round
of the 2012 MLB Draft, announced that he will return to Georgia
for his senior season.
Francis Brooke of Northwestern was one of 24
recipients of the Big Ten’s 2012 Medal of Honor. The award was
first given in 1915 to one graduating student-athlete at each
university who had “attained the greatest proficiency in
athletics and scholastic work.” The right-hander is ninth in
program history with 259.2 innings pitched, while his 97 innings
in 2012 rank fourth on the single-season list. Brooke posted an
ERA of 2.51, fifth best in the Big Ten and the school’s top mark
in 16 seasons. Brooke is a double major in political science and
international studies. He was Academic All-Big Ten three times
and twice a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar.
