Cal
State Fullerton junior outfielder Gary Brown (right) has been
sidelined by a broken finger on his left hand. The injury on his
non-throwing hand was suffered on a successful steal attempt.
Surgery will not be necessary and is expected to miss at least
two weeks. Brown leads the Big West in batting average (.485),
runs (62), hits (92), triples (8), total bases (146) and steals
(31). The Titans have clinched first in the Big West and secured
the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Matt McCay, an assistant coach at North Carolina,
will be named head coach at Brevard College. McCay has been with
the Tar Heels for the past three seasons after a six-year career
in professional baseball. McCay played for UNC head coach Mike
Fox for two seasons at North Carolina Wesleyan (1997-98) before
joining him with the Tar Heels from 1999-2000. The outfielder
batted .297 with seven homer and 78 RBI in 119 games at UNC.
