Arizona claims top spot in CBI Composite Preseason Poll

 

Arizona State sits in second, North Carolina is third, South Carolina is fourth

 

By sitting in the Top 5 in all four national polls, including the top spot in the Collegiate Baseball rankings, Arizona is No. 1 in the CollegeBaseballInsider.com Composite Preseason Poll.

The Wildcats were 42-17 a season ago. Led by right-hander Preston Guilmet (pictured right), Arizona is second in the Baseball America poll and fifth in both the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and USA Today/ESPN polls.

Fellow Pac-10 member Arizona State (49-15) holds the top spot in the NCBWA and USA Today/ESPN polls and comes in second in the CBI Composite Poll. North Carolina (57-16), the national runner-up each of the past two seasons, is third. South Carolina (46-20) is fourth and Ole Miss (40-25) rounds out the Top 5.

Two-time defending national champion Oregon State (49-18) is 10th in the CBI Composite Poll, ranked anywhere from seventh to 19th in the national polls. UCLA (33-28) is first in the Baseball America poll and 15th in the CBI Composite Poll.

There are five teams from the ACC in the CBI Composite Poll, four from the Pac-10, SEC and Big 12, and three from the Big West. There are single entries from Conference USA, West Coast, Missouri Valley, Big Ten, and Big East.

Why a composite poll? CBI felt that four national polls was enough. Plus, each week you find discrepancies that make it tough to gauge where a team really is. This week's example: UCLA is No. 1 in one poll and No. 19 in another.
