Mathews pitches Georgetown past Virginia

Indiana blanks Louisville, Jacksonville outscores UCF, LSU tops Tulane

 

Georgetown 1, No. 16 Virginia 0

In Charlottesville, Va., Simon Mathews retired the first 15 hitters of the game as Georgetown blanked Virginia. Mathews (2-2) struck out two. Will Brown allowed two hits in three innings with one punchout before David Ellingson pitched a perfect ninth for his third save. A.C. Carter homered in the fourth for the Hoyas (9-10) for the game's lone run. Robbie Coman and Kevin Doherty both had hits for the Cavaliers (14-8).

 

Indiana 3, No. 7 Louisville 0

In Bloomington, Ind., Scott Effross and three relievers combined on a five-hit shutout as Indiana blanked Louisville. Effross (2-2) allowed two hits and a walk with five strikeouts to earn the victory. Austin Foote (2.1 IP H 4 K) and Luke Harrison (1.2 IP, 2 H, K) held the shutout through the eighth before Ryan Halstead fanned two in a perfect ninth for his fifth save. Isaiah Pasteur homered twice for the Hoosiers (16-5), a solo shot in the third and a two-run dinger in the fifth. Brendan McKay went 1 for 4 with a double for the Cardinals (18-7).

 

Jacksonville 13, No. 8 UCF 9

In Jacksonville, Fla., Connor Marabeli and Austin Hays both homered and drove in three as Jacksonville outscored UCF. Marabeli (2 for 4, 3 R) had a three-run homer to cap a four-run third for the Dolphins (12-11). Hays (3 for 5, 2 R) had a leadoff homer in the sixth to snap a 5-5 tie and give JU the lead for good. He added a two-run double in the eighth. Matt Diorio (3 for 5) homered twice and drove in seven for the Knights (20-6), including a grand slam in the ninth.

 

No. 1 LSU 13, Tulane 7

In New Orleans, Jake Fraley went 2 for 5 with four RBI to lead LSU past Tulane. The Tigers (22-3) scored three in the third to snap a 1-1 tie and take the lead for good. Andrew Stevenson had four hits and two runs, while Mark Laird homered and scored three for LSU. Hunter Hope and Richard Carthon both drove in a pair for the Green Wave (17-8).

 

No. 2 Texas A&M 11, UTSA 1

In San Antonio, Texas, Logan Taylor had a two-run single to highlight a six-run first as Texas A&M topped UTSA. Ronnie Gideon (2 for 5, 4 RBI) had a three-run homer in a four-run fifth, while Blake Allemand went 5 for 6 for the Aggies (25-1). Turner Larkins (3-1, 6 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 4 K) earned the win. Grant Gibbs had an RBI single in the ninth for the Roadrunners (13-11).

 

No. 3 Vanderbilt 12, Middle Tennessee 7

In Murfreesboro, Tenn., Jeren Kendall smacked a tie-breaking home run in the eighth as Vanderbilt rallied past Middle Tennessee. The Commodores (20-5) trailed 7-5 after seven innings. Karl Ellison (2 for 4, 2 R, 3 RBI) hit a two-run homer to knot the score at 7-7 before Kendall (4 for 5, 4 RBI) went deep to give Vandy the lead for good. Zander Wiel had a three-run double and scored later in the frame. Jared Allen went 2 for 5 with a homer and two runs for the Blue Raiders (13-9).

 

No. 4 TCU 4, Oklahoma 3 (10)

In Fort Worth, Texas, Jeremie Fagnan had a game-winning pinch-hit RBI single in the bottom of the 10th to lift TCU over Oklahoma. Dane Steinhagen had a one-out single in the 10th, moved to third on an error and scored on a base hit by Fagnan. Trey Teakell (1-1, 3 IP, 5 H, 2 R, ER, BB, 2 K) earned the win in relief for the Horned Frogs (18-4). Taylor Alspaugh had two hits and two runs for the Sooners (17-10).

 

No. 5 Florida 9, Stetson 6

In DeLand, Fla., Josh Tobias had three hits and three RBI as Florida outscored Stetson. Tobias had an RBI single to spark a four-run first and added a two-run homer in the eighth to give the Gators (21-5) the lead for good. Richie Martin had three hits and three runs for UF. Patrick Mazeika (1 for 3, 3 RBI) had a two-run double in a five-run sixth for the Hatters (14-12).

 

No. 6 UCLA 5, San Diego State 2 (13)

In San Diego, Ty Moore belted a three-run homer in the top of the 13th to carry UCLA past San Diego State. Moore finished with two hits and four RBI. David Berg (2-0, 2.2 IP, 2 H, R, 3 K) earned the victory. Ryan Muno went deep for the Aztecs (19-6).

 

James Madison 8, No. 19 Maryland 6

In Harrisonburg, Va., James Madison built an 8-0 lead and held on to defeat Maryland. Kyle Weston had a two-run double in the third and Bobby San Martin had a two-run single to cap a four-run fifth for the Dukes (10-11). Tim Lewis had a two-run triple and scored in five-run sixth for the Terrapins (17-5).
