Thompson Takes over
Program at Auburn
Butch Thompson has returned to Auburn as its
new head coach.
Thompson was an assistant coach and recruiting
coordinator for the Tigers from 2006-08.
For the past seven years, he was associate head
coach and pitching coach at Mississippi State. He was named
National Assistant Coach of the Year in 2014. Thompson helped
the Bulldogs reach four NCAA Regionals, a pair of Super
Regionals and one trip to the College World Series, finishing
as national runner-up in 2013.
A native of Amory, Miss., Thompson attended
Itawamba Community College in Mississippi. He moved to
Birmingham Southern and earned a bachelor’s degree in history
in 1992. Thompson received a master’s degree in sports
administration at UAB in 1996.
Thompson has been an assistant at Huntingdon,
Birmingham Southern, Georgia, Auburn and Mississippi State. He
has made seven trips to the College World Series, won nine
conference titles and reached 14 NCAA Regionals. Thompson
worked under three National Coach of the Year honorees.
