Smith Leaves Indiana for Arizona State

Former Indiana head coach Tracy Smith has been named the new head coach at Arizona State.

Smith was National Coach of the Year and a unanimous selection for Big Ten Coach of the Year in 2013 when he led the Hoosiers to their first College World Series appearance. IU hosted a Regional this year at Bart Kaufman Field.

Smith, 48, was head coach at Indiana for the past nine years after leading the program at Miami (Ohio) for nine seasons. He took the RedHawks to a pair of NCAA Regionals and took the Hoosiers to three Regionals. Smith has accumulated more than 600 career victories.

Indiana has record at least 40 wins in each of the past two seasons and registered consecutive Big Ten titles for the first time in program history.

A native of Kentland, Ind., Smith was a four-year letterman at Miami (Ohio) as a pitcher and infielder. He played in the Chicago Cubs' minor league system for three seasons.

Smith became head coach at Miami University-Middletown in 1990. He was an assistant coach at Miami (Ohio) from 1993094 and was the pitching coach at Indiana from 1995-96.

Indiana has begun a national search for its next head coach.
