Florida A&M Powers Past Florida

Virginia blanks UR, FSU rallies past Stetson, South Carolina tops Upstate

 

In Gainesville, Fla., Ryan Kennedy and Jeremy Barlow each hit two-run homers as Florida A&M edged eighth-ranked Florida 4-3 on Wednesday, giving the Rattlers their first win over a ranked opponent since beating No. 4 Miami 2-1 in 1980. Barlow went 3 for 4 on the day, and Brandon Fleming (3-3) tossed three innings of one-run ball for A&M (18-21). Kendal Weeks posted his first save. Harrison Bader went 3 for 4 with a homer and two RBI for the Gators (27-15).

 

No. 1 Virginia 13, Richmond 0

In Charlottesville, Va., Joe McCarthy went 2 for 3 with a grand slam and five RBI, and Robbie Coman, Derek Fisher and Mike Papi also homered as Virginia hammered Richmond. Alec Bettinger (5-0) tossed six innings with one hit and 11 strikeouts for the Cavaliers (35-7). The Spiders fell to 15-22-1.

 

No. 5 Florida State 13, Stetson 3

In Tallahassee, Fla., Florida State blew open a close game with 10 runs in its final three at-bats to complete a two-game sweep of Stetson. The Seminoles (32-9) trailed 3-2 before tying the game with a run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Danny De La Calle (2 for 3, R). FSU took the lead with two in the sixth as Ben DeLuzio (1 for 3, 2 R, 2 RBI) had an RBI triple and scored. The Seminoles padded that lead with five in the seventh and three more in the eighth. John Sansone went 3 for 5 with two runs and two RBI for FSU. Dylan Silva (3-0, 1.2 IP, H, 3 K) earned the win. Patrick Mazeika homered and drove in two for the Hatters (17-26).

 

No. 10 South Carolina 6, USC Upstate 1

In Columbia, S.C., Kyle Martin went 4 for 4 with a run and an RBI, and Joey Pankake and Gene Cone each went 3 for 3 with two runs as South Carolina topped USC Upstate. Curt Britt (2-0) worked 3.2 scoreless innings to pick up the win for the Gamecocks (32-10). Erik Samples had a pair of hits for the Spartans (14-30).

 

No. 15 Louisville 7, Morehead State 3

In Louisville, Ky., Alex Chittenden had a two-run double in the fifth to put Louisville ahead for good in defeating Morehead State. Jimmy Wright (2 for 3) had an RBI double and scored in a three-run second for the Eagles (22-19). Danny Rosenbaum (2 for 2) had a two-run single in the fifth and Chittenden (3 for 4, 3 RBI) doubled later in the frame to give the Cardinals (30-11) a 4-3 advantage. UL added a run in the seventh and Corey Ray belted a two-run homer in the eighth to complete the scoring. Robby Spencer had two hits for MSU.

 

No. 16 Miami 10, Florida Atlantic 9

In Boca Raton, Fla., Tyler Palmer had an RBI single in the top of the ninth to snap an 8-8 tie and help Miami outscore Florida Atlantic. Garrett Kennedy also had a run-scoring base hit in the ninth to give the Hurricanes (29-13) a 10-8 advantage. Miami trailed 5-1 before exploding for seven in the fourth. The Owls (21-19) tied it at 8-8 with three in the bottom of the fourth. Ricky Eusebio had three hits and three RBI for the Hurricanes. Tyler Rocklein went 3 for 5 with two runs and three RBI for FAU.
