Roberts knocks in four as VMI upends Virginia

Louisville nips Western Kentucky, Western Carolina clips Clemson

 

In Lexington, Va., Sam Roberts had two hits, three runs and four RBI as VMI thumped No. 3 Virginia 12-3 in front of a record crowd of 1,463 at Gray-Minor Stadium. It was the first midweek loss for the Cavaliers (27-8). Steven Proscia was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the top of the first before Jordan Ballard’s two-run single sparked a three-run bottom of the frame for the Keydets (29-5). John Barr (2 for 3) had a run-scoring single in the fourth before Roberts ripped a two-run homer in the bottom of the stanza for a 5-2 advantage. Barr homered in the top of the sixth before Roberts’ two-run single highlighted a six-run outburst in the bottom of the frame as VMI pushed its lead to 11-3. Rob Dickinson had a dinger in the seventh for the Keydets to complete the scoring. Jeremy Brown (pictured) made his second start and allowed two runs in 3.1 innings. Chris Duty (2-0) won with three innings of relief with one earned run, two hits, two walks and four strikeouts. Cory Spangenberg had three hits and two runs for VMI.

 

No. 13 Louisville 7, No. 19 Western Kentucky 6

In Bowling Green, Ky., Louisville snapped a 4-4 tie with two in the eighth and Stewart Ijames (3 for 5) homered in the ninth to edge Western Kentucky at Nick Denes Field. Jeff Arnold (2 for 4) and Adam Duvall (2 for 5, 2 RBI) had run-scoring singles with two outs in the top of the eighth as the Cardinals (26-6) took a 6-4 advantage. Kory Perti (2 for 4, 2 R) went deep in the bottom of the frame as the Hilltoppers (27-9) pulled to within one. Ijames’ blast gave Louisville a 7-5 advantage Kes Carter (2 for 5, 2 RBI) had a RBI groundout in the bottom of the ninth, but WKU came up one run short. Andrew Clark had two hits and two RBI for the Cards. Jake Wells drove in three for the Hilltoppers.

 

Western Carolina 7, No. 17 Clemson 5

In Clemson, S.C., Tyler Kirkpatrick (3 for 5) belted a grand slam in the seventh to help Western Carolina down Clemson at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. Trailing 5-3, Kirkpatrick’s blast gave the Catamounts (23-9-1) a 7-5 advantage. Three WCU hurlers held the Tigers (23-11) hitless over the final four innings. Andrew Chilcoat (1-0) got the win while Daniel Ottone worked the final two innings to earn his seventh save. Trevor Collias had two hits, including a double, and one RBI for the Catamounts. Wilson Boyd had two hits and two RBI for Clemson, while John Hinson had a two-run homer in the first for the Tigers.

 

No. 5 Georgia Tech 25, Georgia 6

In Athens, Ga., Tony Plagman and Jeff Rowland both went 4 for 5 as Georgia Tech pounded Georgia at Foley Field. It was the largest margin of victory for the Yellow Jackets (28-7) in the 112-year history of the rivalry with the Bulldogs (11-22). Plagman had a double and a homer with three runs and three RBI. Matt Skole had a grand slam in the sixth and drove in five for Tech. Mark Pope (5-0) allowed five runs in six innings with six strikeouts to earn the victory. Plagman’s dinger sparked a four-run third as the Jackets took a 6-0 lead. Zach Cone had a two-run homer in a four-run bottom of the frame to narrow the margin to 6-4. Tech added seven in the fourth to take control at 13-4. Connor Winn and Jeff Ussery both went deep in a six-run eighth for the Jackets. Zach Taylor had three hits for Georgia.

 

No. 6 LSU 10, Tulane 4

In Baton Rouge, La., Mikie Mahtook and Leon Landry both drove in three as LSU outlasted Tulane at Alex Box Stadium. Rob Segedin smacked a three-run homer in the top of the first as the Green Wave (21-13) took the early lead. Mahtook (3 for 4) had a dinger to spark a three-run rally in the bottom of the frame. Blake Crohan had a run-scoring single in the third at Tulane took a 4-3 lead. A RBI double by Tyler Hanover (3 for 4) capped a two-run outburst in the bottom of the stanza as the Tigers (27-6) took the lead for good. Landry’s two-run single capped a three-run fourth and Mahtook’s base hit brought home a pair in the fifth.

 

Jacksonville 10, No. 7 Florida State 8

In Tallahassee, Fla., Adam Brett Walker had two doubles and three RBI as Jacksonville jolted Florida State in front of 4,180 fans at Dick Howser Stadium. Trailing 4-2 after seven, Walker and Chuck Opachich (2 for 5, 3 RBI) both had two-run doubles in a five-run eighth. James Ramsey (2 for 3, 2 RBI) had a RBI single in the bottom of the frame for the Seminoles (26-8) to make it 7-5 before the Walker had a run-scoring double in a three-run ninth as the Dolphins (18-17) took a 10-5 advantage. FSU put up three in the bottom of the ninth, but stranded the tying runs in scoring position. Jonathan Murphy had three hits and three runs for JU. Tyler Holt had two hits, two runs and two RBI for the Seminoles.

 

No. 8 Arkansas 5, New Mexico 4

In Fayetteville, Ark., Christian Kowalchuk dominated on the hill as Arkansas nipped New Mexico at Baum Stadium. Kowalchuk (3-0) finished the game with 3.2 perfect innings with two strikeouts. The Lobos (21-13) scored twice in the sixth to knot the score at four before Zack Cox (3 for 5) had a run-scoring single in the bottom of the frame as the Razorbacks (28-6) took a 5-4 lead. Tim Carver had two hits and two RBI for Arkansas. Adam Courcha had two hits and drove in a pair for New Mexico.

 

No. 10 South Carolina 10, The Citadel 4

In Charleston, S.C., Scott Wingo homered twice and knocked in three as South Carolina took care of The Citadel at Joe Riley Park. Matt Simonelli went deep in the first for the Bulldogs (23-13) before Wingo’s first dinger in the third tied it at one. The Citadel led 2-1 after four before Jeffery Jones’ two-run double keyed a five-run fifth as the Gamecocks (26-7) took a 6-2 lead. Wingo (3 for 4) homered again in the sixth for a 7-2 advantage. South Carolina scored its final three runs in the eighth. Josh Pless tripled and scored in the ninth for the Bulldogs. Nick Ebert went 2 for 3 for the Gamecocks. Bryan Altman had two hits and two runs for The Citadel.

 

No. 11 Coastal Carolina 12, North Carolina 4

In Chapel Hill, N.C., Coastal Carolina used three home runs to extend its win streak to 10 in a victory over North Carolina at Boshamer Stadium. Tommy La Stella had a two-run single and Adam Rice (4 for 4, 3 R) belted a two-run homer in a four-run first for the Chanticleers (29-5). Daniel Bowman (2 for 5) added a three-run dinger in the third to make it 7-0. Scott Woodward’s two-run blast capped a three-run fourth as Coastal built a commanding 10-0 lead. Austin Fleet (4-1) earned the win in relief, allowing two hits and no runs in 4.1 innings with three walks and six strikeouts. Ben Bunting had two hits and one run for the Tar Heels (22-13).

 

No. 15 Miami (Fla.) 9, FGCU 0

In Ft. Myers, Fla., David Gutierrez pitched seven perfect innings and three hurlers combined on a one-hitter as Miami blanked FGCU in front of 3,627 fans at Hammond Stadium. Gutierrez (3-0) used six groundouts, seven strikeout and eight flyouts to retire the first 21 Eagles (21-11) in order. Making just his second start, Gutierrez was taken out after hit pitch count reached 84. Eric Whaley gave up a hit batsman, a single and a walk in the eighth, but kept FGCU off the scoreboard. Daniel Miranda pitched a perfect ninth to secure the shutout. The Hurricanes (24-9) scored one in the first, two in the second, two in the third and four in the ninth. Yasmani Grandal had two hits and three RBI, while Scott Lawson added two hits and two RBI. Luke Smierciak had the lone hit for the Eagles.

 

Pittsburgh 21, Duquesne 9

In Pittsburgh, Joe Leonard hit for the cycle as Pitt downed Duquesne at Trees Field. Leonard went 5 for 5 with three runs and four RBI. He had a run-scoring single in a three-run first, a homer and triple in an eight-run second, and a single and double in the fifth. John Schultz went 3 for 3 with a home run, two walks, five runs and five RBI for the Panthers (23-9). Cory Brownsten had two hits and four RBI for Pitt. Derek Lefever had a three-run homer in the third for the Dukes (7-26). Matt Carson and Rick Devereaux both had three hits for Duquesne.
