3 Ole Miss outscores Northwestern State; No. 6 Texas tops UTPA

 

In Cary, N.C., Brian Cipolla drove in six runs over the final three innings as Old Dominion got past North Carolina 8-6 in 10 innings Tuesday evening. After driving in two in a four-run eighth, Cipolla’s homer with two outs in the top of the ninth knotted the score at 5-5. His bases-clearing double in the 10th gave the Monarchs (2-1) an 8-5 advantage. The Tar Heels (3-1) managed just one run in the bottom of the frame.

 

No. 3 Ole Miss 15, Northwestern State 4

In Oxford, Miss., Brett Basham had three hits, two runs and two RBI to lead Ole Miss past Northwestern State. Jordan Henry had three hits, two runs and drove in one for the Rebels (4-0). Brett Johnson’s two-run single in the top of the first gave the Demons (2-2) an early lead before Ole Miss responded with one in the bottom of the first and six in the second.

 

No. 6 Texas 10, Texas-Pan American 3

In Austin, Texas, Brandon Workman struck out 11 in six innings as Texas took care of Texas-Pan American. Workman (1-0) surrendered six hits, one walk and two runs. Brandon Belt had two hits and drove in four for the Longhorns (4-0). Travis Tucker had three runs and three steals for Texas.

 

No. 13 Wichita State 6, Emporia State 3

In Wichita, Kan., Dusty Coleman and Cody Lassley each had two hits and one RBI as Wichita State topped Emporia State. Keith Hernandez had a two-run homer for Emporia State in the top of the first. The Shockers (3-0) tied it in the bottom of the frame on a two-run shot by Josh Workman. Lassley’s RBI single in the second gave WSU the lead for good.

 

No. 11 Rice 11, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 7

In Houston, Texas, Chad Mozingo had four hits and three runs to lead Rice past Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The Owls (2-2) pounded out 16 hits. Chase Wheaton had a three-run homer for the Islanders (1-3).

 

No. 14 UCLA 22, Cal State Northridge 2 (suspended)

In Northridge, Calif., the game between UCLA and Cal State Northridge was suspended in the middle of the eighth due to darkness. A decision on the outcome of the game will be determined on Wednesday. CSN plays at UCLA on April 15.

 

No. 19 Cal State Fullerton 4, Loyola Marymount 0

In Fullerton, Calif., four hurlers combined on the shutout as Cal State Fullerton blanked Loyola Marymount. Daniel Renken (1-0) allowed one hit over four innings with four strikeouts. The Titans (3-1) got all the runs they would need in the second as Jared Clark led off with a double, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Josh Fellhauer. The Lions fell to 1-3.
